Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare industry has faced massive challenges around recruitment and retention. According to a study published by JAMA, a disproportionate number of Black and female professionals have left the healthcare industry in the past few years, while fewer Black workers have entered the field. Continued poor recruitment and retention of Black healthcare workers will have major implications for equitable patient care, the researchers warned, at a time when Black Americans already suffer from systemic racism that leads to disproportionately negative health outcomes.
We must leverage Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (EDIB) principles to address the inequities and moral harm experienced by healthcare workers and the communities they serve. Our annual conference May 13-16 is bookended by two immersive equity-focused offerings. Participants can register for either of these sessions individually, or elect to attend them as part of the full conference.
PRE-CONFERENCE INSTITUTE: MAY 13 Led by Irwin Batara, a subject matter expert with more than 30 years of experience in nonprofit human resources, we will demonstrate how applying an EDIB lens contributes to improved workforce satisfaction and retention. In part two of this PCI, we'll focus on EDIB and health equity practices that teams can adopt to disrupt the ecosystem of harm that organizations are often complicit in. We'll cover leadership mistrust; cultural humility and safety; Healing Centered Engagement; the benefits of using an equity lens for policy, practices, and data reivew; and leveraging partnerships to support patients and staff.
LEARNING LAB: MAY 16
As we look to address the social injustices of health and wellbeing, we must first acknowledge and reckon with the roots of the Western medical model. The framework of cultural safety understands and names the history, context, and ongoing role colonization has in the health inequities that plague the communities we serve. During this Learning Lab, Dorene Waubanewquay Day (educator, midwife, Indigenous activist) and Erin Tenney, DNP (nurse-midwife and women’s health nurse practitioner), will guide us through the concepts and tenets of cultural safety. While this session will focus on cultural safety for Indigenous people, the tenets learned can also be applied to all populations.

| Fact Sheet Examines Health Insurance Across States
| |
Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) programs are dedicated to providing comprehensive primary care, behavioral health, and support services to people who are homeless regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. But absent reimbursements from insurance, these safety net providers are more limited in the care they can offer and in their ability to refer patients to a broader range of needed care.
Our new fact sheet provides a comprehensive look at health insurance at HCH programs, and how state-level decisions regarding Medicaid expansion affect geographic and racial equity.
