As we approach mid-semester, it is immensely gratifying to see the engaging work and collaborative initiatives coming to fruition across campus. Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to stop by Small Hall and witness the go-live for the first small experimental plasma device. The group included visitors from Auburn University as well as W&M faculty and students. Seeing this cutting-edge research in action was a great reminder of the wealth of academic achievement and possibility that surrounds us every day. Please continue to reach out to share events or research updates in your departments.

Here are the top 5 things to know this week:
|
|
|
-
Tomorrow is the deadline to complete the anonymous William & Mary Teaching and Learning Survey. If you have not already done so, please take the time to ensure your perspective can help shape the future of learning spaces at W&M. Additionally, there are four remaining forums hosted by the Learning Spaces and Landscape Planning committees. I strongly recommend attending as your schedule allows. This week’s session takes place on Wednesday, October 2, in Tidewater A & B, and focuses on designing for collaborative learning and accessibility.
-
Last week, the Board of Visitors met on campus. Academic Affairs had a robust agenda, including welcoming several new committee members. I’m pleased with the productive discussions that took place. I’m especially grateful to Adam Gershowitz for sharing an update on the faculty handbook revision process; Omiyẹmi Green for providing an overview of the Art & Science Exchange; Pamela Eddy for speaking about KPI progress; and Tim Wolfe for giving an overview of the freshman class profile.
-
Please encourage your students to participate in TribeCTF 2024, the inaugural Capture The Flag competition organized by the W&M Cybersecurity Center in partnership with ManTech International, and co-located with &Hacks, W&M’s hackathon. This is a fantastic opportunity for problem-solvers, puzzle lovers and digital detectives from all schools and backgrounds (and the first-place prize is $5,000)! Registration is now open.
- You’re invited to Connect on the Patio next Wednesday, October 9, from 4–5:30 p.m. Stop by the Conservation Patio at Swem Library for snacks, drinks and conversation. This is a great way to head into your Fall Break on a high note.
-
This week’s shoutout goes to everyone on campus who worked tirelessly to make Family Weekend a success, particularly those of you who opened your classrooms to parent and family guests. I understand we had especially high participation this year, and I appreciate your willingness to play a role in this special W&M tradition.

This week, we bid farewell to Martha Wescoat-Andes, Senior Associate Provost for Planning & New Ventures, who will be retiring from W&M in October. Martha joined W&M in 2020 and played a pivotal role in balancing long-term strategic planning with an ever-evolving academic landscape. She is passionate about academic and professional wellness, and has been a consistent champion of integrating well-being into our strategic framework. Please join me in thanking Martha for her numerous contributions and wishing her all the best as she embarks on this exciting next chapter focused on her work in leadership and wellness coaching.
Finally, remember to share your feedback on leadership programming for faculty development opportunities in the survey you received last week.
