At approximately 2:30 p.m., the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) advised that customers take precautions and boil their water for one minute before cooking or drinking until further notice. This was due to a water main break this morning in Upper Northwest Washington, DC. The areas affected by this advisory include the main campus of American University, the Washington College of Law, and 4200 Wisconsin Ave. DC Water has provided a map of the affected area.
This advisory was issued out of an abundance of caution. To support the safety of our campus, American University Campus Dining is closing all dining facilities until further notice, including catering services. The university is making arrangements to have bottled water made available on campus, and additional information on distribution will be provided.
We encourage all members of the AU community in the affected areas to follow the precautionary guidance offered and boil water used to drink, brush your teeth, or prepare meals. When boiling, bring water to a rolling boil for one minute, then allow to cool. Avoid using drinking fountains.
More information is available through the DC Water website. You can also call DC Water Customer Service at 202-354-3600 or the 24-Hour Command Center at 202-612-3400.
We will keep our community advised of changes to this advisory.
Onward,
Bronté Burleigh-Jones Chief Financial Officer, Vice President, and Treasurer
