Essentials of Teaching and Assessment Course

Friday, September 5, 2025; 8:00 am-4:00 pm; Davis Center
A one-day intensive course held every September to introduce participants to the pedagogy, strategies, and resources for effective teaching and assessment. This course is designed especially for faculty, residents, fellows, graduate students, and postdocs new to teaching.
This event is open to all UVM Larner College of Medicine faculty, students, and staff at all teaching sites in the University of Vermont Health Network and the Clinical Branch Campus/Nuvance Health in Connecticut. College of Nursing and Health Sciences faculty are also welcome.

Anna Ricci, PhD, Teaching Academy Member and Assistant Professor, Neurological Sciences, attended the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) Annual Conference in Calgary, Alberta, CA earlier this month, thanks in part to the Teaching Academy Travel Award. She presented a poster entitled “Faculty Self-Assessment of Teaching and Its Usage in Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review Protocol” and attended workshops and sessions on topics ranging from active learning, AI in medical education, and faculty development.
- Deborah Cook, MD, Teaching Academy Expert Teacher and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, was invested as the inaugural holder of the Allison and Matthew S. Dinehart Green and Gold Professorship in Dermatopathology on May 30, 2025.

In three months, Bei Zhang, MD, PhD, MLS (ASCP), Teaching Academy Distinguished Educator and Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, achieved one grant, one publication, two certificates, and delivered three international workshops/presentations. At the most recent IAMSE annual conference, Dr. Zhang presented two sessions tiled “Appropriate Interpretation and Use of Student Rating of Teaching: Pitfalls to Avoid and Best Practices for Growth” and “The Power of True Stories: Lessons Learned in the Shoes of Students from Master Adaptive Teachers.” She received the Faculty Award of IAMSE-ScholarRx Curriculum Development, in collaboration with Leila Amiri, PhD, and Stephen Everse, PhD. At the 10th International Meeting of the Association of Biochemistry Educators (ABE) annual conference, Dr. Zhang co-directed a workshop titled “Integrating Biochemistry into Real-world Clinical Practice.” Dr. Zhang received the HERS Leadership Certificate from the HERS Leadership Institute-Leadership Development Program for Higher Education Professionals, as well as the certificate of IAMSE Medical Educator Fellowship.
