Sparkfest 2026 was a big success–a group of intrepid volunteers engaged hundreds of prospective students and their families, letting them know about all the programs LCSL offers. Check out the happy faces in the photos!
Our LLAs are doing a wonderful job supporting students in their classes, and we are also continuing to offer drop-in language tutoring in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Arabic, and Chinese. Our tutoring program continues to provide students with accessible, effective support and opportunities to practice their language skills outside the classroom. Check out the drop-in tutoring calendar to see tutor availability throughout the week and find a time that works for you!
If interested in our tutoring program, consider attending our Meet the tutors event Monday, October 5, 11:00-12:00 in 207 Grant Hall. Wondering what kind of upper-level student decides to become a Language Learning Assistant/peer tutor in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, or Spanish? Have an LLA and want to say hi? We’re having a party, join our current LLAs and tutors for tongue twisters and meme creation–and treats!
The LCLC celebrated the diversity of languages and cultures through a series of engaging events throughout the last two weeks. Students experienced Korean Thanksgiving with traditional Korean food, games, and cultural activities, and celebrated the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival with Chinese snacks, drinks, music, and games. The Oasis was an especially fun and unique place to be during our Polish and Russian Pickling event, where students got to see and try firsthand how to make pickled cabbage.
We also brought students together for the Italian See the World through Film event, Spanish and French movie nights, as well as a French Loup Garou game night, offering opportunities to enjoy films while exploring the cultures and languages behind them. These events created a fun, welcoming environment for students to connect, learn, and experience languages beyond the classroom.
Keep an eye on our calendar for more fun language special events, such as the Italian Commedia dell’arte on October 28th. .
Recruitment Push: Registration for Spring 2027 is coming up and LCLC is preparing to staff tables in SCE, advertising all LCSL programs to current UIC students. Of course we’ll include information about all summer study abroad programs!
