SGA had the good fortune to play the Jefferson Landing course in its pristine condition, before the devastation to Ashe County by Hurricane Helene.

SGA Savors the Mountains
The Senior Golfers returned to Jefferson Landing for their End-of-Summer in the Mountains event and were fortunate to experience three beautiful rounds of golf just days before Hurricane Helene barreled into the area. The event began with drinks and dinner on the peaceful patio of the golf shop, overlooking the pristine course. SGA Hall of Fame members  Bill Cembor and Janie Risley were recognized.
After three somewhat rain-threatened days of golf, SGA 2021 Homecoming winner Gus Neville was winner at gross for the men. At that former event, much sports news was centered around the just-formed LIV golf tour and all the controversy surrounding it. Gus quipped at the time that he soon would be joining and competing on their circuit. "As it turned out, my LIV invitation did not materialize," said Gus. "While I was disappointed, I must say now I'm glad I did not become a part of LIV. Playing with SGA is much more rewarding."
Lady winner was "The SGA Judge," Jean Spradling. "I love the course here at Jefferson Landing," said Jean. "I also loved the people here. This was a very special SGA event with some very special people attending, but then, I have loved every trip I have taken with the organization."
Low Net winners were Nancy Atkinson and Bob Cummings. Close to pin winners were Bob Cummings, Gus Neville, and Jean Spradling. Best Ball of Team were Bob Cummings, Es Cummings, and Jean Spradling. Putting winners were Edwina Gates, Bob Cummings, Es Cummings, and Gus Neville.  Congratulations to all!

We wish the Jefferson Landing staff all the best as they restore and repair their beautiful golf course.

News from Western North Carolina

SGA members from throughout the country are concerned about the hurricane victims in the Carolina mountain areas and have contacted us for any information we may have. Our beloved SGA members at Springdale/Cold Mountain all came through the storm with minimal damage, and are helping in the hurricane relief for the surrounding Haywood County and Asheville area.
For many years Senior Golfers of America has held events at and has been involved with the Waynesville Inn and Golf  Club. The newly-renovated course has sustained much damage, particularly to the back nine, but there was minimal impact on the Waynesville Inn. Both inn and course are closed for the month of October, as all guest rooms are being used by emergency responders from other areas.
Longtime contacts at Eseeola Lodge and Linville Golf Club have informed us that while surrounding Avery County had broken water and power lines, flooding and washed-out roads, the lodge and golf course are open now, having been closed only a few days.
The course at Jefferson Landing is closed, as the majority of holes on the front nine will have to undergo major repair. It is possible that nine holes, not necessarily in any order, may open as soon as next week. However, in the western part of Ashe County, some roads still need repair, and thousands of people remain without power, even now, two weeks later.
SGA is encouraging everyone who wants to contribute to hurricane relief to donate to ashefoodpantry.org, our designated and highly-recommended area charity for the Jefferson Landing event. Sarah & Ken Young  have  let us know the SGA Springdale group is planning to help some of the club's employees who suffered losses to get back on their feet.  For more information, reply to this email, and we will put you in touch. As Sarah writes, "It will take a long time for Western Carolina to recover …. but there is a lot of determination in these folks!"
Please consider a contribution to the highly-effective Ashe Food Pantry. Thank you!
