The holiday started right here in Pennsylvania and has since spread nationwide.
Pennsylvania has more than 6,500 local parks and 125 state parks. The hard work of park and recreation professionals and volunteers keep these amazing public spaces clean, safe, and accessible for all.

Hikers in eastern Pennsylvania have a new place to explore with the recent opening of the Bridgeton Nature Preserve in Black Eddy, Bucks County.
Bridgeton Township acquired the 107-acre former quarry property in part with a grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Grant funding came from the Keystone Fund.
In partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club, the township built hiking trails throughout the preserve. The site now offers accessible opportunities for hiking, fishing, and seasonal skating.

New Video: River of the Year |
|
|
|
|
In our last issue, we talked about the Conestoga River and its recognition as Pennsylvania’s 2026 River of the Year.
A new short video now highlights the river and the investments the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and our partners have made in improving it.
“DCNR, over the past five years, has invested over $11,650,000 along the Conestoga Greenway,” explains Mary Hundt, DCNR Rivers Program Specialist, in the video. “That includes acquisitions for water-based land protection, park rehabilitation, boat launches, and in-stream restoration projects.”
The Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers administers the River of the Year award with funding support from DCNR. Grant funding comes from the Environmental Stewardship Fund.
