Community Operations Network For Treatment After Childhood Trauma (CONTACT) Logo

Hello Community Partners,

I have a tradition here at STL CAC to tie dye onesies for staff whenever they’re expecting a new baby. I recently had the opportunity to do that twice. I enjoy the process and hope the gift brings a bit of joy to the new mothers as well.

As I was working on the project this time around, I reflected at how lucky these new kids are – that they’d be raised by families who were so knowledgeable and caring. And then that got me to thinking of all the young kids for whom our agency provides services. So many of them have not been so lucky and have experienced many traumatic events.

Given these musings, this month's newsletter focuses, once again, on trauma and young children. Kate Drewry has provided a very nice overview of the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention for Young Children. And our Notable Numbers section provides a glimpse at the incidence of trauma in younger kids.

As always, I hope you find this information helpful and that it encourages you to provide referrals to our program. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you might have. We’re eager to provide free help for kids and families who have recently experienced a traumatic event.

I’m grateful for your support.

As a reminder, we now serve children ages 3-18 who have recently experienced trauma. We use the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) a brief therapy model typically lasting between 5-8 sessions. Clients are scheduled at their earliest convenience, usually within 12 days.

Please call our intake line at 314-516-7330 to make a referral. To make online referrals, contact Joel at epsteinj@umsl.edu about creating a secure patient portal account.

Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention:

An Introduction to the Adaptation for Young Children

The young child adaptation of the Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI-YC) is an early mental health intervention designed for children from approximately ages 3–7 who have recently experienced a potentially traumatic event or disclosure of abuse. Developed as an adaptation of the standard Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention model, CFTSI-YC recognizes that very young children often express trauma differently than older children and may have limited verbal ability to describe their internal experiences. Notable Numbers

Although childhood trauma is tragic whenever it occurs, many people find it to be even more upsetting when it happens to very young children. Unfortunately, this is all too common. We completed a brief analysis to examine the trauma exposure of the children we serve here at STL CAC and found there is a strong indication we are seeing children who, at a very early age, have experienced traumatic events.
