Importance of Building a Network of Mentors as a Postdoctoral Scholar
As a postdoctoral scholar, you’ve probably heard many people suggest the benefits of creating a network of mentors to support you throughout your journey. However, creating that network and overcoming the challenges of connecting with the right guides in your field can be daunting. In her article “One mentor isn’t enough, here’s how to build a network of mentors,” Erika Moore suggests a handful of steps to build your confidence and create the best network to help you succeed. A few of her suggestions include:
1. Casting a wide net. If someone inspires you, don’t hesitate to reach out. See a presentation you enjoy? Send an email. Admire the way someone runs their lab? Don’t hesitate to send that email. You may not get a response every time, but reaching out is the most important step.
2. Consider the context. If someone rejects your requests for mentorship, it typically isn’t personal. Consider that they may be about to move institutions, or they are already at capacity in their workload. Don’t let rejection leave you stuck in your head.
3. Come prepared. For every meeting you get, come prepared with questions. It never hurts to show people that you’re invested in the relationship and eager to learn.
