MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Mrs. Susan Oweis

Dear Families and Friends of PCS,
We are now in the year 2025 and wow have some things changed. But many things remain the same. I recently watched a few video clips where parents challenged their teenagers to complete well-known proverbs, sayings, or famous quotes. Phrases like, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch,” “Better late than never,” and “Waste not, want not” were used. The results were hilarious—when a parent prompted with “The early bird…,” their child’s response was often wildly unexpected. Most of the time, the teens didn’t know the correct endings.
I was intrigued, I decided to try this with some students at school, and what an experience! Their answers ranged from creative to completely off-the-wall. But as I listened, I realized just how much wisdom is packed into these old sayings. “Strike while the iron is hot.” “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” “The early bird catches the worm.” These aren’t just phrases—they are life lessons, much like scriptures. They offer guidance, warning of pitfalls, and can help us avoid unnecessary heartache if we take them to heart.
So, parents, if you’re ever looking for a meaningful activity with your kids, teach them some classic proverbs—words of wisdom that can serve them for a lifetime. Encourage them to pass these down to their own children one day. You never know when they’ll need them most, and it’s a wonderful way to ensure your voice and values stay with them for years to come.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Olivia WY Ju
What grade did you start at PCS?  I started at PCS in the 3rd grade.

Do you have any favorite memories at school?  One of my favorite memories at school is the time we were taken out of classes and sent to do an escape room without knowing. I was able to learn more about the people I was grouped with as well as test my problem solving and critical thinking skills.

What's been your favorite area of study/subject? My favorite subject has always been math. I found out around middle school that I was quite talented in the math department, and thanks to PCS I was able to take accelerated courses which allowed me to take a college math course during my senior year. My interest in math has also let me tutor others in this subject, giving me an opportunity to share my knowledge with others.

How has PCS help you beyond just book learning? PCS does an amazing job at fostering relationships across many grades. With prayer buddies and houses, it is much easier to create connections with people outside of my classroom.

What are your thoughts about the future, college plans?  I’m aiming to hopefully get into either Virginia Tech or UVA, and I am currently still waiting for their response. The future is daunting, but I think PCS has equipped me with many of the skills I need to face it: from leadership to academics, I feel confident that I can thrive in whatever college environment I am put in.

What advice do you give to the younger students at PCS? My advice to younger students at PCS is to use your teachers! (not in a bad way) I think it is often overlooked how useful a resource our teachers and staff can be. Beyond just teaching our classes, the staff at PCS are extremely knowledgeable in a variety of different fields. Even if they don’t know something, they often know someone they can refer you to that would know the answer. School becomes much easier when you maintain good communication with your teachers!

What will you miss about PCS next year? I will definitely miss the staff at PCS next year. I have had so many good experiences throughout my years and have been treated with so much kindness. I know not every establishment will have such a great staff lineup, and that is something I will definitely miss as I go into college.
