Happy August! Richland friends - you may notice the difference in this newsletter. I have merged my Sauk and Juneau list with my Richland list because of livestock educator Beth's departure. We typically co-wrote a newsletter for just Richland County. Now, I have combined lists until another educator is hired. If there are pertinent livestock events in the region, I will try to include them. If you don't wish to receive crop updates, feel free to unsubscribe.
Our crops received some much-needed rain as the month began. The state has equal chances for above, near, or below normal precipitation and temperatures in the month of August. If you recently harvested small grains, now is a great time to plant cover crops.
If you need a break from scouting your fields, there are many great events to round out the summer. Please consider attending!
Current pests to be looking for: western bean cutworm - egg masses and small larvae, corn earworm in sweetcorn, corn rootworm - adults, Japanese beetles, soybean aphids - undersides of newest trifoliates, spider mites in corn and soybean
Current diseases to be looking for: tar spot and Southern rust in corn.
