Tips for Traveling with Parkinson’s
Summer is here and that often means it’s time to hit the road and travel. For many living with Parkinson’s, just leaving the house can be a challenge and traveling can just seem too daunting. However, careful planning can help you factor in your unique needs and still have a great time traveling this summer.
1 - Plan to bring all your Parkinson medications and assistive equipment with you. Make sure to write a list of all your essentials that help you live with PD. Then plan to take extra.
2 - Request assistance in airports. Consider requesting special help, such as a luggage service. This can take a big stress of airline travel off your shoulders. Note that you may need a note from your doctor.
3 - Call ahead to the hotel to inquire about any special accommodations. You may not end up needing anything special, but it can ease your mind to know ahead of time what is offered and available.Â
4 - Continue to take medications as prescribed when changing time zones. It is very important to take medication using your everyday intervals between doses. Set your medication alarms the same as when you are at home. Make sure to have water and snacks with you as needed for taking medications. Talk to your doctor prior to travel.
5 - Check your medical insurance coverage. Make sure that your insurance will cover where you are traveling and get supplemental travel insurance if needed.Â
6 - Call the Parkinson’s Foundation Helpline at 1-800-4PD-INFO (1-800-473-4636) The helpline can assist you in finding out what Parkinson’s resources are available in the area you are traveling to.Â
7 - Take your time, Relax and Enjoy.Â
