New report shows resurgence of volunteering and community engagement in Texas |
Last year, Texans made a remarkable impact on their communities! According to the latest Volunteering and Civic Life in America research released this week by AmeriCorps, 6.5 million volunteers dedicated 440.6 million hours of service in Texas, generating an astounding $14.1 billion in economic value for the state.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges to volunteerism, but it also sparked a renewed appreciation for community and service. While volunteer rates temporarily declined, many individuals found creative ways to give back through virtual volunteering and neighborhood initiatives. As we emerge from the pandemic, we are witnessing a resurgence of volunteerism as Texans reconnect with their communities and seek to make a positive impact, with a 6.1% increase in formal volunteering over the pandemic years.
Beyond formal volunteering, the spirit of giving and engagement was evident across the state:
|
-
More than 11 million Texans provided informal help to their neighbors.
- 20.4% of Texans were active members of organizations.
- 43.8% of Texans generously donated $25 or more to charity.
|
These numbers paint a powerful picture of a state united by compassion and a desire to serve others. This research underscores the importance of a vibrant civic life and the role of Texas nonprofits in fostering opportunities for Texans to give back. By working together, we can continue to build stronger, more resilient communities.
