The power of computing and how we organize and use information enables us to solve our world’s greatest challenges. In our continued efforts to organize ourselves in thoughtful and effective ways that serve students and fulfill our mission, The University of Texas at Austin is combining key academic units to establish a new, interdisciplinary school of computing within the College of Natural Sciences.
The school will serve as a new focus for computing excellence, which exists across many areas of our campus. It will bring together top programs in related disciplines to strengthen research collaborations and prepare students for successful careers in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, statistics, user experience, cybersecurity, and many other fields.
Set to open in Fall 2026, the school will be a single academic unit created from the Department of Computer Science, School of Information, and Department of Statistics and Data Sciences. Students in the new school will continue to pursue their existing degree programs while gaining broader access to a range of courses and interdisciplinary opportunities. I am grateful to the leadership in these disciplines for coming together to build this vision and to the faculty and staff who contributed to this planning process.
This effort will enable new discoveries and accelerate our success in areas of critical importance to our future. I am confident this school will help expand what we can accomplish for Texans and the world. It is an important step forward that strengthens our leadership at the frontiers of science.
