The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Ocean Engineering hopes you are enjoying your winter break. As we approach the beginning of the Spring 2025 semester, in addition to the opportunities and events listed in this bulletin, the department has two exciting announcements to share:

CEOE Student Event Calendar: You can view the CEOE student event calendar here. In addition to CEOE student events, the calendar includes information about competitions featuring our CEOE student athletes!

CEOE Textbook Library: The department is excited to announce the creation of the CEOE Textbook Library. We hope this will be a great way for students to have access to textbooks. We are seeking donations of textbooks from across all courses. If you have any textbooks you no longer need, please consider donating them to the library by dropping them off at Davidson Lab 244.

NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates |
The U.S. National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program supports research by undergraduate students in any area of research funded by NSF. Undergraduates can apply directly to REU Sites to participate in research projects across the United States and the world. REU-supported students receive stipends and in many cases assistance with housing, meals and travel. For additional research opportunities, explore the Information for Undergraduates here.

The New Jersey Water Environment Association (NJWEA) Scholarship |
NJWEA is awarding scholarships based on academic performance, merit, and demonstrated interest in the environment. Awards are for the current school year. Additional information is available here. The deadline is March 15. Last year, a CEOE student was awarded this scholarship so consider applying.

American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Southern New Jersey Scholarship
|
This scholarship is open to civil engineering students who are at least a sophomore and reside in Southern New Jersey. Additional information is available here. The deadline is March 15, 2025.

|
American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) New Jersey Scholarship |
ASCE New Jersey has published their scholarship applications. It is open to students entering their junior or senior year in civil engineering in fall 2025. Additional information is available here. The application requires multiple steps and signatures, so plan ahead. The department has received a number of these awards each year, so consider applying. The deadline is March 1, 2025.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey Scholarship |
The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey (ACECNJ) awards up to seven scholarships each year to students who intend to become consulting engineers. The scholarship application is here and the deadline is February 7, 2025. Many Stevens students have won before, so it is suggested students consider applying. This scholarship requires multiple signatures from the department, so please plan ahead.

Hispanic Scholars Foundation |
Students may apply to be a Hispanic Scholar for the 2025-2026 academic year through February 15. Participants receive a scholarship and mentorship throughout the program. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and be of hispanic heritage. Additional information is available here. Numerous CEOE students have received this scholarship.

The American Council of Engineering Companies of New Jersey Scholarship |
The Professional Engineers in Construction of New Jersey is pleased to announce that they will present the 2024-2025 Sol Seid Award for Excellence to a junior civil engineering student. The award will have a value of up to $15,000 to be paid to the student.
They will select the awardee(s) from the nominees submitted by each of the seven universities in New Jersey offering civil engineering degrees.
The Professional Engineers in Construction Student Awards Committee will consider academic excellence, extracurricular activities, work experience, an ability to express ideas, an interest in career opportunities in the construction industry, and pursuit of a licensure as a PE in making the final determination of the recipient.
If you are interested in being the nominee from Stevens, please submit the below information to Prof. Sarath Jagupilla and Liz O’Connell by January 19 at 4pm:

- Half a page letter of introduction that outlines your interest in the construction industry, your pursuit licensure as a PE, and any other relevant information.

After receiving the completed packages, the CEOE Department will select the nominee who will complete the full application.

Arcadis: Career Paths in Consulting Engineering
|
Join us for an introduction to the field of Engineering Consulting, where we'll explore the key sectors Arcadis is involved in and what sets them apart from other firms. Industry professionals will share insights into their projects and offer a high-level overview of their experiences at Arcadis. This event is designed to help students imagine themselves pursuing a career in consulting and gain a deeper understanding of the paths in this field, as well as learning about career and internship opportunities within Arcadis.

Life After School: From Senior Design to Real-World Projects
|
This seminar will cover life after graduating and what to expect when working for an engineering consulting firm. Allie and David will discuss topics such as resume writing, interviewing, tips for transitioning to the working world, managing manager expectations, FE/PE exam questions, and any other topics students have questions on! They will also discuss a couple of interesting real-world projects that they are working on to help give an idea of what projects are out there.
Speakers: Allie Moss is an Environmental Engineer at CDM Smith who graduated Stevens in 2022 with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Environmental Engineering. Her work experience with CDM Smith has covered water treatment and distribution, PFAS treatment and design, remediation studies, data validation and 3-D modeling, water resources engineering, and sustainability. While at Stevens, Allie was a member of the Women’s Basketball Team, a campus tour guide and lifeguard, an Undergraduate Dean’s Board Advisor and Stevens Environmental Engineering Board Advisor, and a Stevens Environmental Engineering Professional Society Member. In her free time, Allie loves to spend quality time with friends and family, run, hike, read, and travel anywhere she can.
David Tanzi is a Senior Project Manager and Senior Vice President at CDM Smith who graduated Stevens in 1997 with a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering followed by a Master’s in Environmental Engineering. His experience covers a wide range of water and wastewater treatment and distribution study, design, and construction projects through the US. He is a past chair of the New Jersey American Water Works Association, a Stevens Environmental Engineering Professional Society Member, and a member of the Stevens CEOE External Advisory Board. For seven years David served as a professional mentor for the Rutgers University Chapter of Engineers Without Borders where he was involved with a water supply project in Nueva Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan, Guatemala.

Stevens undergraduate students, faculty, and staff are invited to explore how the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering is responding to sufficient, real-world challenges and making a difference in the community.
This event is a great opportunity to learn more about research initiatives and potential opportunities in CEOE while connecting with researchers, faculty, staff and students. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in lab tours for a few of the department laboratories.

CEOE Battle of the Programs
|
CEOE Professional Societies (ASCE, SEEPS, Chi Epsilon, SNAME, and COPRI) will team up with CEOE undergraduate students, faculty and alumni to compete in a number of events to determine the champion of the department. The event is hosted by the department's Advisory Council and the aforementioned professional societies.

This is the second consecutive year that all three scholarships were awarded to Stevens students.
