SGA Starts off the Year on the Islands
The carambola, which is what we on the mainland know as star fruit, is plentiful on St. Croix and grows prolifically along the lush Carambola Golf Course. Carambola were beginning to show fruit as the Senior Golfers returned to the Caribbean at just the right time in January of 2025, managing to escape the snow throughout much of the country.
The event began with drinks and dinner on the balmy patio at Carambola Beach, where SGA Hall of Fame members Jeff Leech, Bill Suehs, and Janie Risley were recognized. Newcomers Tina Rubenstein and Diane Cardano & Stan Casacio were welcomed by all.
A warm week together provided much enjoyment of the beach, local seafood, handcrafted pina coladas, parasailing, perusing the Caribbean Museum of Art, a sunset cruise which ended with a tropical shower, and, of course, three great days of St. Croix golf.
SGA newcomer Diane Cardano-Casacio, who posted a fine 75 on the opening day's round on the Buccaneer, was winner at gross for the ladies. "Stan and I have been to many islands," said Diane. "I've loved every one we have visited, but this trip was special because of the great people I met. We felt very welcome in the group and were impressed with the kindness and friendliness of the other SGA members."
Winner for the men was Diane's husband,  Stan Casacio. "I do love golf," said Stan, "but meeting people really is what life is about. It's our first time with the Senior Golfers, and it was a very positive experience. My playing partners were just great and I am looking forward to seeing everyone again soon."
Low Net winners were Sue Arnold and Jeff Leech. Best Ball of Team awards went to Karen Lindsay, Janie Risley, and Bill Suehs. Daily Net winner was  Jean Spradling. Congratulations to all!
Special thanks goes to Warren Brooks of Native Sons Taxi, who, along with his darling 20-year-old son Javyn (don't call him Jamey!), shuttled the SGA members all over the island. We love you, Warren!

Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts

Throughout CMCArts’ 30-year history, the organization has served the community as an active exhibition center for the visual and performing arts, exhibiting the work of artists and artisans from St. Croix, the USVI, Puerto Rico and the greater Caribbean.
CMCArts seeks to become a cultural gateway and point of connection for all of the Caribbean with the vision to be innovative and to deepen a commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage as well as contemporary experiences of the Caribbean diaspora.
SGA FoGs enjoyed touring the gallery show of the local artist guild, as well as shopping in the extensive museum gift shop. Back to the Islands event winners took home pastel ceramic votive light houses, patterned in the Danish influence of the island and hand-crafted by local artists of St. Croix through the Center for the Arts.
The paintings are very good, but the view from the windows are even better!

Congratulations, Jean!

Back to the Islands participant Jean Spradling had been back to Houston just a few days when her friend, Karen Lindsay, who also was on the trip, reported to the SGA office that Jean had scored a hole-in-one while they were playing together!
Jean recorded the ace on Riverbend's #3, a par-three, 128 yards. All SGA members are encouraged to let us know of any big news like this -- everyone likes to celebrate with you!  Speaking of that, Jean's quote regarding her hole-in-one is, "There goes my 19th hole tab!" This was the second ace of her career.
Jean had been back to Houston only a few days when her friend Karen, also on the trip, reported Jean's Ace on Riverbend #3. Congratulations!
