Fifteen years ago, Mike Rhyne underwent cervical fusion surgery with Dr. Jatana to address neck problems. The results were so successful that, when new symptoms developed years later, he knew exactly who to call.
About two years ago, shortly after moving homes, Mike began experiencing persistent low back pain. At first, he hoped it would improve with time, but the pain continued to worsen. Soon, he noticed instability in his left foot when walking on uneven surfaces and began developing pain radiating into his leg.
For someone as active as Mike, these symptoms were especially frustrating. An avid cyclist and car enthusiast, he spends much of his free time restoring classic Datsun and Nissan Z cars. As his symptoms progressed, even walking car shows became difficult, and he found himself limiting his exercise and many of the activities he enjoyed. Mike realized it was time to call Dr. Jatana again.
After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Jatana confirmed that surgery would be the best option. However, this time there was an alternative to fusion surgery. Mike was a candidate for lumbar artificial disc replacement, a motion-preserving procedure designed to maintain movement at the treated level and potentially reduce stress on the surrounding spinal segments compared with a traditional fusion.
Having already undergone spine surgery once before, Mike felt prepared for the experience. He was also pleased to learn that his insurance approved coverage for the artificial disc replacement procedure.
Mike had an L5-S1 anterior disc replacement surgery by Dr. Jatana in October, and immediately Mike's leg pain and feelings of instability were gone. Now he's back to cycling and enjoying an active lifestyle once again. Most importantly, he's returned to working on his collection of five Datsun and Nissan Z cars.
Mike credits Dr. Jatana's expertise for helping him get back to doing what he loves. He especially appreciates Dr. Jatana's bedside manner and the time he takes to thoroughly explain every aspect of treatment and answer questions patiently. Mike also praises Physician Assistant Heather Weber for being friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to work with throughout the process.
On a recent afternoon in his garage, Mike caught himself effortlessly bending, crouching, and working on his car—and appreciated just how much his life had changed since surgery. For Mike, the surgery wasn't just about relieving pain—it was about returning to the activities that bring him joy.
