Breaking Up with your Comfort Zone is Hard to Do

by Emily Lang

When I was 17 my mom and one of my teachers conspired to enter me into our county scholarship pageant. It wasn’t that I was some great beauty – it was that I was painfully shy, and they thought forcing me out of my comfort zone would help. When they approached me with the idea, I distinctly remember them telling me what a good chance this was to earn some money for college.

“Besides, it’ll be good for you,” my mom said, gently encouraging her always resistant teenage daughter.

I really, really didn’t want to participate, but I also wanted to go to college, so I agreed. We bought a swimsuit, borrowed a dress and began practicing interview questions after school.

When it came time to pick a talent, I tried out several ideas before we landed on a song. A few vocal lessons with the local band teacher later, we were all surprised to learn I could sing a little.

As the big day drew near, my nerves began to ramp up. To help us prepare for the actual pageant, the organizers took a small group of pageant participants to several local schools, where we would “preview” our talents. I sang on stage in front of my entire high school at an assembly arranged just for the occasion, and there too, people were surprised to learn I had a decent voice.

District 5750 Newsletter - July 2022  Online Newsletter

"Imagine Rotary." What a great theme from Rotary International for my year as your Governor. It is a fun and exciting time of renewed hope, dreams, and like our theme, imagination of a great year for Rotary.

I have had the pleasure of installing offers for this year's Rotary Clubs  at Woodward, Ponca City, west Oklahoma City, South OKC and attending clubs in action in OKC Sunrise, Yukon, and soon Clinton!

I stand on the shoulders of our great past district governors and ever thankful for Will Beckman, Chuck Musgrave, Matt Tipton, Angela Rickman, Michelle Schaefer, and so many others for their leadership. Jeanean Yanish Jones (DGE), Jack Werner (DGN), PDG Megan Law (District Administrator), and PDG Lance Singleton (District Treasurer) have had several meetings planning our year of service on your behalf.

My goals are simple but will need a team of dedicated club presidents to enact:

     1. Showing care & concern for our Rotarians in our clubs.
     2. Engaging every Rotarian in our clubs to be involved in service of their choosing!
     3. Forming a "Rotary Rapid Repair" team to help clubs by going to them at their location to help                   with the forms, proceedures, memberships, etc.

I agree with our Rotary International President Jennifer Jones. As I heard her speak these words, "We don't have a problem bringing members into Rotary. We struggle to keep them." Let's keep our members while bringing in new members!

Let's embrace change, new club models, retains traditions that work, and as RIPE Jennifer says, let's adapt and retool. She goes on to say "You don't imagine yesterday... you imagine tomorrow.

I am full of excitement for 2022-2023 and I look forward to meeting you all!
