white house transition

Anita B. McBride is currently an executive in residence at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies in the School of Public Affairs at American University. She previously served as assistant to President George W. Bush and chief of staff to First Lady Laura Bush from 2005 to 2009, directing the staff’s work on the wide variety of domestic and global initiatives in which Mrs. Bush was involved with primary responsibility for the First Lady’s work to support US foreign policy objectives in human rights, women’s empowerment, global health, and human freedom. McBride's White House service spans two decades and three presidential administrations, including as Director of White House Personnel under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush; and as Director of the U.S. Speaker's Bureau at the United States Information Agency. Also under President George W. Bush, McBride served as a special assistant for White House Management; as senior advisor in the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Organizations and as the State Department's White House liaison.

REFLECTIONS

The Aftermath: Rule of Law and Elections
by Bart Binning, Ed.D.

The day of the riot in the Nation’s Capitol, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, now a director of Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, issued a statement that said, in part:

What we witnessed was a stain on our democracy -- whatever your political views -- that must never be repeated… Peaceful protest is a long held right of democracies but that is not what happened today.
The desecration of the US Capitol building is a flagrant violation of the rule of law and an attack on the democratic processes that have been underway. Those who participated should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The United States of America has long been an example to countries around the world for our commitment to democracy and the peaceful transfer of power, even during the most difficult of times. (1)

I doubt that there are any that disagree with the sentiments of Dr. Rice. However, if we are to move forward, we need to understand the past and uncover the root causes for the struggles of the past. In short, we need to understand the answer to a common WHY.
In problem solving one needs to separate symptoms from the underlying problems; fixing a symptom does not solve what is wrong. The rule-of-thumb in problem solving is to ask the question WHY, a minimum of three times. If you find an answer to the WHY question, it is a symptom - ask WHY again. When you no longer have an answer to the WHY question, you have identified the problem.

January 2021 - District News

Happy New Year!

This month is vocational service month at Rotary. There are many great ideas from other clubs and districts across the world, so I thought I would share a few of them that I found here.

1. Present a vocational award to someone in the community who has exemplified outstanding professional achievement and high ethical standards. Promote the presentation in the community.
2. Help young people prepare for their careers by sponsoring a character-building project, virtual career day, or virtual mentorship program.
3. Support professional development in the community by sponsoring a professional networking event or workshop, or start a career counseling program to help unemployed or underemployed adults compete in the job market.
4. Have club members volunteer their vocational skills on a community or international service project.

I hope these ideas give you some inspiration and thoughts on serving our community in January and throughout the year.
