Message from the CEO
Family Well-Being Across the Lifespan

We understand that the world is a complex place. There are so many variables to any one situation or event. Yet, in many instances, we still deliver services that address one problem in isolation. A hot meal, an afternoon of tutoring, a few moments of healthy and uninhibited play. Job training, a bus pass, financial counseling. Any and all of these may help an individual reach his or her potential. But, if we think of these programs and services as part of an integrated whole, how much more effective can we be in building strong communities?

Fortunately, as we have outlined in our new report (see below), “The Two-Generation Approach Framework,” the human services sector, both public and private, is committed to breaking down the silos between various programs and services and bringing a whole family approach to our work. Many of our members are at the forefront of this two-generation approach. The report features initiatives of the state government systems and legislatures of Utah, Connecticut, and Colorado. Each state demonstrates that creating clear lines of communication and the opportunity to share information is a key starting point to better results. What a novelty—we should talk to one another to learn from one another.

I urge you to read the report and to share it widely with your colleagues, in both the nonprofit and public sectors. This makes too much sense to keep it to ourselves.

Lee Sherman, President & CEO

Building Family Well-Being with State-Level Two-Generation Frameworks
The National Human Services Assembly has released “The Two-Generation Approach Framework: A Closer Look at State-Level Implementation” funded by The Annie E. Casey Foundation. The report explores how three states–Colorado, Connecticut, and Utah–are developing and implementing a Two-Generation (Two-Gen) framework in their human service programs. The Two-Gen approach builds well-being by working with both generations of families simultaneously to support early childhood education, elementary education, economic stability, and family engagement.

The report brings to bear salient inflection points from the interviews across all three states, which represent the challenges that each state has faced and, in many cases, the solutions chosen to address them. State-level information includes: (1) background and context for the Two-Gen approach taken by each state; (2) an overview of the Two-Gen programs at the state level; and (3) a "policy map" providing a graphic representation of the Two-Gen framework in each state.
