PHUMC Celebrates Newest Member

Finn Robert Aikens was baptized at our Worship on the Lawn service last Sunday. Finn is the infant son of Hunter and Adrienne Aikens, and brother to Lucy and Davis.
Finn's banner, made by Rebecca Olack, will hang in our Worship Center for a year, reminding everyone to welcome Finn and learn his name.

A beautiful April Sunday set the stage for our Worship on the Lawn service. After guest songwriter and musician Trailand Eltzroth led us in worship, we celebrated an infant baptism, and then PHUMC Kids planted zinnia seeds under the direction of Chere Peel.

New Leadership Board for PHUMC

Parkway Hills UMC, joined by the West Jackson District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Stephen Cook, voted unanimously Sunday, April 16 to move to a simple governance board structure.  Effective immediately, the four committees that engaged in the administrative work of Parkway Hills UMC (Trustees, Finance, SPRC, Administrative Council) will be rolled into one simplified board to be named our Leadership Board.
Members approved at the meeting to serve on the Simple Governance Board are as follows:
Class of 2023: Cathy Robertson, Pat Dunn, John Reed
Class of 2024: Edye Hambleton, Darlene Roberts, Chris Gibbs
Class of 2025: Drew Pruett, Christine Morrison, Jody Nichols
Members must sit off the Board for at least one year after serving their term.
Pat Dunn will continue to serve as SPRC chair and it is recommended that SPRC chair also serve as the Leadership Board chair for communication effectiveness with the MS Conference and the District. Chris Gibbs will continue to serve as Trustee chair. While it is not necessary in the simplified structure to vote for a specific Finance chair, Drew Pruett, who was serving as Finance Chair, will continue to serve as the lead on the Board for financial matters. The Leadership Board also includes our Lay Leader, currently Alan Branson, and our Lay delegates to MS Annual Conference, Bobby Stephenson and Florence Cooper.
The first meeting of the Leadership Board will be Wed., May 3 at 6:20 pm.
The committee on Lay Leadership and Nominations will remain in place to identify, develop, deploy, and evaluate lay leadership within the church. Two informational sessions were held about the shift as well as a recap given the day of the church conference. If you were unable to attend these meetings but still have questions, please reach out to Pastor Dawn. Pastor Dawn is currently working on contacting via email anyone who was currently serving in a leadership role to discuss next steps.  We do best what we do together and we look forward to all our next steps at Parkway Hills UMC!
We delivered 40 bags of grapes to the 3rd grade classes at East Flora Elementary. Students and teachers were very appreciative of the snacks to eat before a long day of state testing. Thank you to all who gave financially, helped pack grapes, and deliver the snacks to the students.

Serving the Homeless at Grace Place

PHUMC volunteers worked this morning to visit with, as well as share the gospel, music, and food with Jackson's homeless citizens at Grace Place, a ministry of Galloway UMC, downtown. Juliet Huam, Jeannie and Bob Chunn, Joe Williams, John Reed, Jerry Sandlin and Brandon Jones served today. Your gracious financial gifts provide food, as well as utensils such as sugar servers and coffee pots. PHUMC volunteers go on the first and third Wednesdays of every month, leaving from our church parking lot at 7:00 am. Contact Juliet for more information on how you can be a part of this important ministry.

Saturday May 6 Plant Swap at 10:00 am at Rebecca Olack's. E-mail or call to get her address and directions. Dig up a "passalong plant" from your yard to share during this year's Annual Plant Swap. Or, if you're not a gardener and don't have a plant to share, how about bringing a bag of coffee beans or a box of tea? (News flash: both are plants!)  A favorite book to swap will be printed on (you guessed it) plant based paper! Maybe you are a cook with some recipes or a jar of jam to share? Not only are your recipe cards plant-based, but you are certainly using ingredients God provides from a garden. You get the idea. This is just a fun morning get-together where all are welcome. Bring something to swap, a treat to share, and the desire to meet some new friends and enjoy the company of those you already know.  See you then!
Join us for Missions in May on Saturday, May 6 with the East and West Jackson Districts. Click the link below to register for this event. The five mission areas provide an opportunity for all skill sets to serve so we hope you'll join us for a day of service and fellowship with laity and clergy.
Once you're registered a follow up email will go out closer to the Mission Date and arrival time and information from the Mission Sites. Some sites will require a different arrival time and instructions.
