FA21 - Week 0: Where it all began edition.
| |
Ahhh, there we go. It feels good to be back.
First time here? Welcome to your new favorite newsletter.
What We’ve Learned is a weekly series of updates for students, delivered with (we hope) a refreshing balance of information and fun. Here’s our last issue of Spring, for context, and a WWL archive if you want to slide into the weekend with some light reading.
Been here, done that? Hello again! We’ve missed you.
[s/o to @UCSDFoodAdventures for the header-design inspo this week, and the amazing campus dining recs.] - Ian

| All vacced up, don’t know when to test?
Here’s the 411 on required Fall testing:
- Vacced? Get tested once-a-week for the first four weeks of the quarter.
- Unvacced? It’s twice-a-week territory, with no fewer than three and no more than five days between tests.
- Got a wastewater signal email? For positive poop notifications nearby, get tested within two days.
Swab Saturday! Testy Tuesday? Here’s a thought: pick any day of the week, have fun with it, and make a habit of testing on the same day(s) each week. For more on our campus test-kit vending machines, check out this introductory video, and remember to complete your self-test outdoors – away from people eating. Ew.

Vend for yourself.
When it comes to these personal-use-only COVID-19 test kits at the afore-mentioned vending machines, sharing is NOT caring. While it may seem like a compassionate act to provide a friend or loved one with access to testing, using another person’s campus ID not only constitutes actual medical fraud, it also poses a serious threat to our public health and contact tracing efforts.
TL;DR: Be sure to swab, lock, and drop your own test kit only. If you don’t yet have an ID, visit the Campus Cards website.

New phone, who dis?
If a public health official needs to be in touch with you about a possible exposure, it’s important that you a) have accurate contact information in MyStudentChart; and b) pick up the phone. To make sure your phone rings – er, buzzes – when they call, save this number in your contacts: 858-534-3300. It’ll also come in handy when you need to call Student Health for a doctor’s note to get out of midterms.
Exposure thereabout. If they do call to notify you of an exposure – and you of course pick up – they’ll let you know that if you’re vaccinated, you may still come to campus for in-person class, masked at all times. You’ll be able to eat outdoors, but not work as a student employee or play club sports. This Delta V’s no joke.

Not only does wearing one allow us to host large-scale activities and events in-person, it keeps our entire Triton community safer. So please: stay masky, UC San Diego.

| Partying withoutTF recently?
Look, we know you’ve been cooped up for a while – we have too! – and that it’s fun to get together IRL. If you “happened” to “forget” your mask while mixing and mingling indoors, please do yourself (and others) a favor by getting tested for COVID. Pay close attention to your symptoms (more on the daily screener, anon) and remember to wear a mask the next time you’re safely socializing.
BAC together again. While we’re on the subject of partying safely, please be acutely aware of your limits with alcohol, and check out some of Student Health and Well-Being’s Stone Cold Statistics on drinking and other drugs.

| You can go your own way.
Just be sure to check maps.ucsd.edu before you leave, so that you don’t run into unexpected construction on campus. The maps’ web interface has tons of filters for buildings, dining options (know how to get to those @UCSDFoodAdventures gems), walking paths, parking, and more.
Not all who wander... But if you’re already lost, look for one of the 250+ bright blue waypoints on light posts around campus, with QR codes which will open a map that’s centered to your exact location. Yes way!

Quick Hits and Bits - Do it before the ‘gram: Remember to complete your daily symptom screener every day that you’re coming to campus. Not sure how? Return to Learn has all the deets to get you kicking and screening.
- No BS: It’s a wastewater milestone! Last month, we collected our 20,000th sample since monitoring began in mid-2020. No word on the number of ramen packets y’all flushed down the toilets in that same span. Hint: it’s too many.
- It’s time we had a Tok. Happy dancing.
- We love a little alliteration: Triton Tools & Tidbits is back for a seventh season! Your favorite podcast’s favorite podcast has a slough of episodes in store for the quarter, on topics like student engagement, mentorship, and résumé building resources.
- A spot without bother? If you’re looking for a quiet place (not the movie) to take a Zoom class on campus, reserve some space in Geisel or the BioMed Library. You can also try the RIMAC Lounge, the Price Center, or the Community Resource Centers when you need to relive pandemic-era remote learning in peace.
- Probably no deep-fried Oreos at this one. On Tuesday, Sept. 28, Student Health and Well-Being (you know, the newest contact in your phone?) is hosting their inaugural Well-Being Fair to promote the eight dimensions of wellness. Campus resources representing each of the dimensions will be in attendance, with workshops, classes, and – obvi – therapy fluffies.

Thank you, Tritons, for everything you continue to do to care for one another.
Sincerely,
Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs UC San Diego
