ETIAS is coming in 2025 - Here's what to know:

European travelers, get ready for another change in your travel plans! The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) implementation is now expected to begin in mid-2025. This was previously delayed. The purpose of ETIAS is to enhance border security to the EU. It is designed for short-term (90 days or less). 

This means that visa-exempt travelers, including Americans, will still need to apply for a €7 (roughly $7.61 at the time of this publishing) authorization before visiting 30 European countries. However, the good news is that children under 18 and adults over 70 will be exempt from paying the fee.

How Does It Work?
  • Individual applications: Each traveler will need to submit their own application, as the authorization is linked to their specific travel document
  • Authorized representatives: If you're not comfortable applying yourself, you can authorize someone else to submit the application on your behalf.
  • Processing times: Quick turnaround: Most applications will be processed within minutes, although some could take up to 96 hours, and a few earmarked for review can take up to a month.
Important Note: The EU is also introducing a new Entry/Exit System (EES) next year, which will replace passport stamps with a digital process. This system will be operational by Autumn 2024.
Additionally, starting January 8, 2025, visitors to the United Kingdom from most countries, including the United States, will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip. This new requirement will introduce a fee of £10 (~$13.05).

The ETA is valid for multiple trips over two years or until your passport expires, allowing for stays of up to six months at a time. Applications will open on November 27, 2024.
