What's up, humans? Insert obligatory commentary on the heat here. |
It's still hot, but there's some really cool events this weekend!
Sorry, that was a terrible pun, but I'm serious nonetheless. Some of these events will actually keep you cool, like seeing a film at Austin's best independent theater, the Austin Film Society.
As music fans it's the perfect time to go because the Sound Unseen Film Festival is about to begin and they're teaming up with KUTX to present the Texas premiere of Play It Loud! How Toronto Got Soul tonight.
I love peering into musical worlds I know nothing about, so I'm genuinely excited about the screening tonight. Did you know Toronto is a Jamaican music mecca? I certainly didn't!
That's just one of many fun things to do this weekend — I'll tell you about some more below.

One of the best ways to support our local music scene is to simply go see some live music, but Austin-based Interplanetary Help Desk just upped the ante with their Let's Fund Good concert series.
Six live concerts. Six album parties. All raising money for 24 Austin nonprofits. Not only do 100% of ticket sales go to local nonprofits, Interplanetary Help Desk is fully transparent on which nonprofit your money is going to. Each show supports a different nonprofit so pick your favorite like DAWA, The SAFE Alliance, and Austin Pets Alive!
On top of all that, the lineup is killer. Might I recommend the show this Sunday with Boomershack and Audrey Price?

Irish troubadour and Oscar-winning songwriter Glen Hansard died Wednesday, and it's hard to put into words how much that loss hurts. We're revisiting his Studio 1A performance from 2015 — a reminder of the raw, generous spirit he brought to every song.
In 1983, 13-year-old Hansard dropped out of school to perform on the streets of Dublin, and by 1990 he'd formed indie folk rock quintet The Frames. He later teamed up with Czech singer/multi-instrumentalist Markéta Irglová as The Swell Season, starring together in the film Once and winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly."
Hansard was known as one of music's great collaborators, including duets and co-writes with the likes of Iron & Wine's Sam Beam and Eddie Vedder across five decades. Last year, he and his band recorded two nights at Berlin's Funkhaus, released this year as a two-volume live retrospective, Don't Settle (Transmissions East & West), spanning songs from his entire career.
"A song needs witnesses," Glen said. "It’s where I feel like I can really grab hold of it. And know it – the way that it’s meant to be known."

This Week In Texas Music History |
|
|
This week in Texas music history, we remember a Texas artist who helped define the Nashville Sound. Jim Reeves first performed in the loud, East Texas honky-tonk style, but, over time, made his sound uniquely his own.

(SPF 1000) Vampire Sunscreen |

The co-founder of Lazyface, Dr. Steven Kent, was seeing too many guys from his five-to-nine in his nine-to-five. So he created a sunscreen he’d recommend to any clinical patient (mineral-based, streak-free, no whitecast).
Lazyface starts protecting you the moment you put it on (no need to wait 15 minutes), and doesn’t absorb into the skin (like chemical sunscreens), which makes it less likely to cause irritation or acne. (Because who wants that?)
Think of Lazyface as a one-step, idiot-friendly, whole-of-face skincare routine for dummies. Or joggers, bikers, hikers, golfers, boaters, rowers, swimmers, tubers, floaters, and soakers.
