SHARING TIMELY INFORMATION ABOUT CHANGES IMPACTING CAMPUS

This fall marks the university’s first full semester using Banner, the university's new student information system. You'll access Banner through Experience, the academic portal replacing myOleMiss.
A transition of this size brings changes to familiar processes and may require some adjustment as the semester gets underway. Below is a quick reference for accessing rosters, entering grades, taking and verifying attendance, and completing other common academic processes.
View what has been shared with students to help prepare them for the fall.

|
-
Access your class rosters and other course information: Start with the Faculty Self-Service card (view overview demo), your new hub for many of the course-related tasks previously completed in myOleMiss. Access the Class List and Roster View demo.
-
New! An Insights (the new reporting system) dashboard named Instructor Course Roster Lookup is now available in the Faculty - Instructor Rosters folder, providing information previously available in myOleMiss rosters. When accessing the dashboard, you must enter a term code and your instructor ID (your 9-character school ID starting with an M, which can be viewed by clicking your initial in the top-right corner of Experience > selecting View Profile) to view your rosters. If you are unfamiliar with Insights, view this recording and the Insights Job Aid.
-
Use Faculty Tools: The "For Faculty" area within Faculty Self-Service gives instructors a central workspace to support teaching. This includes setting up Office Hours, searching for your students, viewing your week at a glance, and more. Learn more about Faculty Tools.
-
Take attendance: Classroom attendance scanners have been retired and will not be available this fall. Faculty may take attendance using the method that works best for their courses. Poll Everywhere is available as an optional attendance and student engagement tool that integrates with Blackboard. Learn more about Poll Everywhere.
- Complete attendance verification: Attendance verification must now be documented in Banner as a "Midterm" grade (NS or PR). The "grade" can be entered manually in Faculty Self-Service or imported as a spreadsheet. View the Job Aid.
-
Approve a late add: For days 6–10 of the semester, students should contact the course instructor to request permission. Instructors are asked to provide approval back to the student via email and to include the Course Reference Number (CRN). The CRN is a unique five-digit number that identifies a specific section of a course, and you can find it on your rosters. From there, students will complete the existing form managed by the Department and attach the instructor's approval email.
-
Communicate with your classes: UM Today is no longer available for faculty to send messages to their classes. Use Blackboard or Banner to communicate with students enrolled in your courses. Learn how. For additional information, view the Communications Guide.
-
Enter grades: Use Faculty Self-Service in Experience or Blackboard to enter grades for your courses. View step-by-step instructions.
|
-
Know when major/minor/program/concentration changes take effect: Beginning in Fall 2026, requests to change a major, minor, or concentration must be submitted by the end of the add/drop period (the 10th day of classes). Requests submitted after the 10th day will take effect the following academic term, unless the student's Dean's Office approves an immediate change.
-
2026–27 Course Catalog Temporarily Unavailable: The 2026–27 academic catalog is temporarily unavailable while additional optimizations are made. In the meantime, the 2025–26 catalog will be accessible at both catalog.olemiss.edu and catalog-archive.olemiss.edu. If you have any questions, please contact catalog@olemiss.edu.
- Know that classification may look different: Some continuing students may see a different classification in Experience than they previously saw in myOleMiss.
-
Banner treats repeated courses differently when determining whether a student is classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior. A completed course counts toward their classification only once unless it is designated as repeatable for credit.
- If a student's classification changes, know that they have not lost academic progress. The difference reflects a change in how their student classification is calculated.
- Be aware of the new academic terminology:
-
Curriculum is now organized by program (the degree), major (the field of study), concentration (a specialized area within a major; formerly emphasis), and minor (a secondary field of study).
-
Dropping all courses is called a "withdrawal." If a student needs to drop all courses for a term, they will now see this process referred to as a withdrawal. Continuing students may know this process as "drop to zero."
-
Viewing FERPA/Proxy Access: Students now grant access to parents and guardians through Proxy Management. A report is available in Insights, in the UM General folder, to help authorized users view proxy access. If you or someone on your team needs access, ask your supervisor to complete the Insights Access Form. Your request will be entered into the ticketing queue and processed for the appropriate level of access, which may take time.
