Mental Health and Wellness

For this release of The Bridge, we are exploring the themes of wellness and connecting to nature as a form of self care and healing. We know that with the current state of the world, it is difficult to explore nature the way we might have wanted. We hope that this release inspires you to make music, meditate, and head outside, even if it's just a walk through your local park, to disconnect and reflect on ways you can take care of yourself.
We are a part of nature and nature is a part of us. Join Gary Baikie, Superintendent of the Torngat Mountains National Park and SOI alum Nicholas Flowers on Facebook live on July 30 at 3pm EST to discuss the importance of connecting to nature and to the land for our social, physical and mental wellbeing. Torngat Mountains National Park is located on the Labrador Peninsula at the northern tip of Newfoundland and Labrador. Follow this guided meditation with Cathy Nolan to wind down after an action packed day on The Bridge. Proud to be from Gander, Newfoundland Cathy works with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District as a Behaviour/Mental Health Support Itinerant.
Isabella de la Houssaye is an endurance athlete, mountain climber, certified yoga instructor and SOI alum who continues to inspire, all while battling lung cancer. Tune in August 11th at 3pm EST to hear her talk about mental health, living intentionally and about the power of not giving up.

What's on Deck!

In our next release we will be focusing on Climate Change! This threat to our planet is altering all life on Earth. Join us to learn about the impacts of climate change from leading scientists and the opportunities and importance of youth engagement at both a community and global level.

SOI Staff Pick: Life into Lyrics

A high school experiential learning program, an unlikely trip to the Arctic and the power of song. Two Chicago youth set off on a life-changing journey. Thanks to a collaboration between three experiential education organizations – Darkspark, Students On Ice and Embarc, Life Into Lyrics documents two inner-city students from Chicago on a powerful journey from the Arctic to Toronto, leading to a conversation with President Barack Obama and an EP – a testament to the power of art, education and investing in youth. Alumni Making Waves

Hannah Tooktoo, SOI Arctic 2010 alum, spent two months cycling across Canada last summer to raise awareness of the high rate of suicide in Indigenous communities. Beginning in Victoria, B.C., she biked nearly 5,000km to Montreal, making several community stops along the way. Read more about her inspiring journey, reflections and powerful message here.
