Remember when Donald Trump spent months on the campaign trail inserting “emails” in every interview, debate, and tweet as a way of taunting Hillary Clinton? Karma is Too Short’s favorite word, aint she? Donald Trump Jr. reacted enthusiastically last year to the possibility of Russian government help for his father’s presidential campaign, according to emails HE released on Tuesday. But what’s really ticking everyone off today? Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) just canceled Christmas! The majority leader delayed the Senate’s August recess, which is a clear sign that the GOP will fall way short of achieving the president’s aggressive agenda that includes repealing Obamacare. The GOP leadership has vowed to introduce a revised measure tomorrow to replace the ACA and to vote on it next week, regardless of divisions in the party. Happening now: Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, Christopher Wray, is appearing before the Judiciary Committee for his confirmation hearing. When his predecessor last appeared before this committee, more than 20 million people tuned in to hang on Jim Comey’s every word. For a president who deeply values ratings, Wray has a tough act to follow. Here’s what we’ve got today:
  • Congressional Hispanic Caucus meets with DHS Secretary John Kelly today.
  • Ben Jealous will get a boost in his campaign for MD governor as Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Our Revolution plan endorsements.
  • BOLD PAC gets bolder.
  • Michelle Obama revealed ... in a new photo book by her WH photog.
  • Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has questions for Don Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort.
  • Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) wants the FEC to look into the Trump campaign.
  • We've got JOBS!
  • Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) join the CBC and CHC today for a presser on voter suppression.
  • Congressional Gold Medal for Filipino WW2 vets planned for October.
  • DeRay Mckesson, Diane Guerrero, Brittany Packnett, and Jidenna share what education the public school system meant to them.
  • New books announced by Valerie Jarrett and Donna Brazile.
  • Paul Butler releases Chokehold: Policing Black Men.
  • CHC BOLD PAC raises some serious cash.
  • More green for minority-owned pot dispensaries in DC.

Booker and Hirono Join CBC, CHC Chairs to Speak Out Against Voter Suppression
This afternoon, Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Mazie Hirono (D-HI) join CBC Chair Cedric Richmond (D-LA) and CHC Chair Michelle Luján Grisham (D-NM) for a press conference on voter suppression at 2:30P, in the Senate studio. Referring to Donald Trump’s voter commission to investigate his claims that millions of people voted illegally, Booker said, "I am alarmed by the purpose of this commission: to look into a nonexistent problem of widespread voter fraud as a guise to collect data that is likely to be used to suppress legal voting in future elections and to provide President Trump's outlandish and laughable claim that he actually won the popular vote with some appearance of legitimacy."
CHC to Meet with DHS Chief as VA Signals Willingness to Help Deported Vets Access Health Services
Today, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will meet with with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly on a range of immigration policy issues, including efforts to end the deportation of veterans. The meeting comes as Veterans Affairs Secretary David J. Shulkin, in an interview with BuzzFeed News, signaled a willingness to consider giving veterans already deported to places like Tijuana, Mexico, access to VA healthcare services.  Congressman Joaquín Castro (D-TX) on Tuesday said it was “encouraging," adding, "I hope the VA secretary will send doctors to visit with, examine, and treat the veterans.” But Castro added that their main priority remains ending the practice of deporting veterans. “These veterans have to be let back into the United States,” Castro said. Stay tuned for a post-meeting report. More here.
Sanders and Our Revolution Plan to Endorse Jealous in the Maryland Governor’s Race
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Our Revolution, a progressive group run by CNN commentator Nina Turner, plan to endorse Ben Jealous for the upcoming Maryland Governor’s race, according to an email sent to Our Revolution supporters in Maryland. This is not a surprise, as Ben Jealous had previously worked as co-chairman of Sanders’ campaign in Maryland. Jealous hopes to unseat Republican governor Larry Hogan by first defeating a crowded field of Democrats. He will face Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, Baltimore tech entrepreneur Alec Ross, and state Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr. Congressman John Delaney, former state Attorney General Doug Gansler, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, and Baltimore lawyer James Shea are also strongly considering runs. Donna Brazile Releasing Tell-All Titled “Hacks”
Politico reports that Donna Brazile is releasing a book called, Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns that Put Donald Trump in the White House. Brazile’s publisher Hachette promises a book that is “equal parts campaign thriller, memoir, and roadmap for the future.” The publisher did not say how much the book deal was worth. “At a moment when our democracy is in crisis, it’s time to tell the truth about what went wrong in 2016. Our nation is under unprecedented assault, and if we don’t get the facts out, it will happen again — and worse than you can imagine,” said Brazile. The longtime political operative was chosen as interim DNC chair after the Wikileaks release of internal party emails last year precipitated the resignation of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL). Brazile is releasing the book on the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s election. More here.

BOLD PAC Raises $3.5 Million
CHC BOLD PAC hosted a welcome reception for newly sworn in Congressman Jimmy Gómez (D-CA) on Tuesday night. During the reception, PAC Chairman Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-CA) announced achieving a historic fundraising season raising over $3.5 million in the first half of 2017. Cárdenas credited the rhetoric from the Trump administration for its success. "As long as there is the vitriol and the extremism that's coming out of the White House and coming out of the Republicans wanting to take 24 million people's healthcare away, as long as they're doing things like that, I think we're going to have a strong response," Cárdenas said to The Hill in April when they had just raised over $2 million. BOLD PAC is dedicated to increasing diversity in the House and Senate and serves as the voice for Latinos in American politics. More info on BOLD PAC here.
Latino-Jewish Leadership Council Heads to the Hill Today
Members of the new national Latino-Jewish Leadership Council (LJLC) kick off their advocacy day on Capitol Hill today. LJLC is comprised of more than 35 prominent figures in the Latino and Jewish communities across the country. The Council aims to further strengthen Latino-Jewish cooperation in advocating for issues of shared concern and values cherished by both communities. Many members of the bipartisan group have held important positions in both Democratic and Republican administrations. The group is lead by Dina Siegel Vann, a native of Mexico City, who previously served as UN and Latin American Affairs Director for B’nai B’rith International. Other members heading to Capitol Hill today include the former head of Ford Foundation Luis Ubiñas, Seyfarth Shaw Partner Leon Rodríguez, Marty Castro of Castro Synergies, Ambassador Carmen Lomellín, Chair of the U.S.-Mexico Foundation Raul Rodríguez, National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts’ Felix Sánchez, and others. The group will be lobbying for immigration reform, maintaining DACA, support for NAFTA, and for enforcement of hate crimes. More on the LJC here.
The Interwebs Battle FCC’s Ajit Pai Today
The internet may look a little different today. Major technology companies and tech advocacy organizations are banding together in a last-ditch effort to save the FCC’s net neutrality rules. Today, companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon, along with lawmakers and other tech groups, will stage a net neutrality “Day of Action” aimed at stopping FCC Chairman Ajit Pai from scrapping the net neutrality rules approved by the agency in 2015. Banners, pop-ups, push notifications and videos will be across participating websites, urging visitors to tell the FCC what they think.
AT&T, a leading opponent of the federal government's 2015 net neutrality rules, said it would join an online protest this week in favor of keeping the rules. NBC writes that the critical issue is whether the internet should be an all-you-can-eat buffet of information, videos, and memes; or an à la carte menu. Should internet providers be allowed to strike deals to deliver some kinds of content, such as their own or those partners have paid them for, at a faster speed? Should the internet be more like cable, where you subscribe to a package of sports, entertainment, and news websites? "No," said millions of consumers the last time the FCC took public comment. Cruz Says Now is the Time to Free Those Detained by Iran
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) introduced legislation calling for the “unconditional release” of Americans detained by Iran, saying that the Iranian government “must be held firmly accountable,” and that the U.S. should do all that is possible to accomplish this, including establishing a multinational task force with other countries whose citizens have been detained by Iran. “(Iran) has detained and imprisoned several U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents in order to extract political and financial concessions from our country,” Cruz said in a statement, adding that releasing those currently imprisoned should be a “top priority.” Among the detained are a father and son, and an Iranian American who is on his fifth hunger strike in protest of his detention. Cruz’s legislation is similar to a bill introduced in the House by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL)More here.
Cummings Comes for Trump Camp Over Russia Meeting
Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Donald Trump Jr., WH Senior Advisor Jared Kushner, and former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, requesting information about their meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer, during the 2016 presidential campaign on the promise of damaging information about then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “Our country has a fundamental principle that a foreign adversary should not and cannot interfere with our sacred elections,” Cummings wrote. “Your decision to take this meeting raises significant questions about your judgment and your respect for the very principles that our democracy has been founded upon."  See the letter here.
Meng Wants the FEC to Investigate Trump Campaign
Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) sent a letter to the Federal Election Commission urging that it perform an official investigation into the actions of the Trump campaign to determine whether they violated federal election and criminal law. The letter follows two stories from the NYT, "Trump Jr. Was Told in Email of Russian Effort to Aid Campaign," and "Russian Dirt on Clinton? ‘I Love It,’ Donald Trump Jr. Said,” which reported that the Trump campaign was eager to accept assistance from the Russian government. “It is now undeniably clear that the Trump campaign willingly and eagerly met with an agent of the Russian government in an attempt to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election,” said Meng. “What transpired was not only wholly un-American, against the very core of who we are as a nation and the values we hold dear, but also very likely illegal and a gross violation of the Federal Election Campaign Act. No person can accept contributions of any kind from a foreign national in connection with an election, period.” See her full letter here.

Bill Pushes Preferential Treatment for Minority Pot Dispensaries in DC
For minority-owned companies and small businesses wanting to get into the medical marijuana business in the nation’s capital, the DC Council recently made it a bit easier. They just mandated minorities be given preferential treatment in handing out permits for medical marijuana dispensaries. “I knew that this would be a high-growth industry in the District, and I’ve had concerns from the beginning that there would not be enough opportunities for African Americans and local businesses,” said Councilman Robert White (pictured).“I wanted to be sure that we carved out space as we pursue this new industry,” adding that the disproportionate number of Black people compared to whites incarcerated for marijuana use is another reason he sponsored the bill. “We have locked up so many Black people for marijuana, and I see it as incredibly hypocritical for those folks to return from prison on marijuana charges just to come back to a place that has now legalized and industrialized it, and they can’t play any role,” he said. More here.
Congressional Gold Medal to Filipino WW2 Vets Planned for October
Following the passage in Congress of the Filipino Veterans of WWII Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2015, plans are underway for a national celebration in October or early November to honor Filipino World War II veterans. The national celebration will coincide with the formal award presentation of the medal to Filipino World War II veterans by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI). At the award ceremony, slated to be held on Capitol Hill, surviving Filipino and American veterans or their next-of-kin will receive bronze replicas of the CGM and a framed copy of Public Law 114-265. The Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project (FilVetREP) is working closely with the U.S. Mint and Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) to accelerate completion of the CGM’s minting and production of at least 500 bronze replicas. Activists Discuss What Public Education Meant to Them
In an insightful piece in Teen Vogue, DeRay Mckesson, Diane Guerrero, Brittany Packnett, and Jidenna shared what education and teachers in the public school system mean to them. “Of the ongoing policy debates spurred by the Trump administration (and there are many to choose from), one of the most pressing regards the state of public education under Betsy DeVos' Department of Education,” writes the magazine. In May, Trump's budget called for a 13.5% cut to education spending. "The Trump administration’s budget request is an assault on the American Dream," said former Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr. "This shortsighted and cruel proposal would make the climb to success much steeper for all our young people, especially students of color and students from low-income families. Instead of investing in the future, the proposal underfunds or eliminates many vital supports that give people the opportunities and tools to better their lives." In support of public schools, the four notable public school alums shared what education and teachers in the public school system mean to them. Read their stories here.

Paul Butler’s Chokehold
You’ve likely seen commentator Paul Butler on CNN and MSNBC talking about anything from social justice issues to breaking down legal cases making headlines. The Harvard undergrad/Yale graduate just released his new book Chokehold: Policing Black Men. As a former federal prosecutor, Butler  illuminates why he says Trump wants to expand “stop and frisk”, why Attorney General Jeff Sessions directed prosecutors to pursue the harshest sentences for minor crimes, and why cops who kill Black men are usually found not guilty -- as in the case of Philando Castile, whose shooting was live-streamed on Facebook. The timely read debuted at number one on Amazon on Tuesday. More about the book here.
Valerie Jarrett Talks About Her Book
It’s official! Valerie Jarrett has announced that she’s working on a book that will combine personal history and civic advice. The book is currently untitled and scheduled for 2019. “I don’t want to just tell my story,” Jarrett, a senior advisor during both terms of the Obama administration, said in a statement. “I want to share the experiences, life lessons and values that have shaped who I am and my ideas for the future.” You can learn more here, but don’t y’all forget you heard it here first! The Queen Hires the First Black Equerry
In some exciting news from across the pond, the Queen of England has selected Ghanaian-born Household Cavalry officer Major Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrahas as her next equerry. The 38-year-old Afghanistan veteran, known as TA to his friends, is believed to be the royal household's first Black equerry. He will hold one of the most important positions in the royal household and assist Her Majesty Elizabeth II at official engagements, including regional visits and audiences at Buckingham Palace, and remain close by her side when Prince Philip retires in the autumn. Judge Halts Deportation of Iraqi Immigrants
A federal judge in Michigan yesterday stopped the deportation of 1,400 Iraqi nationals living in the state, while courts review the order to remove them from the U.S. Judge Mark Goldsmith issued a 24-page opinion asserting jurisdiction in the case, over the objection of the Justice Department. "This Court concludes that to enforce the Congressional mandate that district courts lack jurisdiction — despite the compelling context of this case — would expose Petitioners to the substantiated risk of death, torture, or other grave persecution before their legal claims can be tested in a court," Goldsmith wrote, more than two weeks after issuing an initial stay of execution on the ICE deportations to allow himself time to explore the jurisdiction question. A hearing is scheduled today to discuss several issues in the case, including a request from the Iraqis to stop the deportations altogether. Michigan has the highest number of Iraqi nationals living in the United States. More here.
Nation’s First Somali American Legislator Weighs in on WH Rhetoric
Mother Jones takes a very interesting look at Minnesota state Representative Ilhan Omar (D), the nation’s first -- and only -- Somali American legislator. Omar made history last November by defeating a Democratic incumbent during the primary who had held the position for more than four decades. But unfortunately, it’s no surprise that the 34-year-old has had to deal with all kinds of ugliness, including an encounter with a DC cabbie who called her “filthy” and “ISIS.” Omar also discusses how she still has that idealism and desire to serve that she came with to Minneapolis as a 14-year-old after spending four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. Naturally, Omar is fearful that the president’s actions and rhetoric will give rise to Islamic extremists. “Our president is their best PR person,” she says. More here.

The Ironic State of Freedom Without Democracy
In an op-ed for The Hill, Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett (D-VI) stressed the lack of democracy regarding her home territory that recently celebrated their emancipation day. Virgin Islanders and Haitians executed the only successful armed rebellion, which eventually led to the sale of the Virgins Islands to the US. Plaskett stressed that since becoming a U.S. territory, the Virgin Islands have held no electoral votes and have no voting representation in Congress. The territory does not receive the same proportion of support in federal dollars as do states for school funding, roads, and healthcare. The congresswoman writes “people from the island fight and die for the country in which they cannot vote for the commander-in-chief who sends them off to war.” Read the entire piece here.
Queer Black Woman Hopes to Take her Case to SCOTUS
A security guard, Jameka Evans, may be heading to the Supreme Court. She says she was discriminated against and effectively forced from her job at the Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah because she is a lesbian and didn't conform to gender norms. Evans and her attorneys at the LGBTQ nonprofit Lambda Legal claim her termination violated Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act -- which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion. Now they want to take the fight to SCOTUS. Get the full story from NBCBLK here.
