New Media Archive Published
| |
|
Scrapbooks are nostalgic, and when based on 22 years of volunteer-driven research, they are remarkable as well. Our founder and first director, Don Hammond (2002 to 2017), published numerous articles in major sport fishing outlets, newspapers, and on websites during his tenure. Last summer, with the help of a research intern, we digitized all of Hammond's articles, newsletters, and written contributions to create an online media archive that documents the progression of our tagging program's expansion and impact throughout the fishing and scientific communities. Included in this archive are 11 scientific publications, a dozen articles published in various outlets, and all the newsletters we have published since we took the reins from Hammond back in 2018. With the most recent contribution to this archive published by Sam Hudson with the Saltwater Sportsman (click here to read Sam's article) a visit and quick read of any of these pieces will teach you something new about dolphin, sport fishing, and our tagging program. Click here to check out the archive. A very special thanks go out to all the journalists, editors, contributors, and promoters of our tagging program for helping us build this amazing archive and resource for the angling community.

New Eastern Tropical Pacific Dolphin Movements
| |
Earlier this month, two satellite tags deployed on a 39.5" female and a 42" male surfaced after 28 and 30 days, respectively. The latter represents the monitoring period for the bull, in which the tag released after its full monitoring period was up. This is second full 30-day period we have acquired for adult dolphin in the ETP. The bull moved 100 miles to the northwest, while the female moved 150 toward the southeast. Each fish was tagged at the same location fishing out of Casa Vieja Lodge on January 9th, 2023. In other news, four new conventional recoveries were reported for tagging activity off Tropic Star Lodge. All fish were tagged and released out of TSL in December, 2022, or January, 2023. Fish were recovered after 10, 15, 52, and 73 days at liberty.

Guy Harvey Foundation License Plate
Fundraising Initiative
| |
The Guy Harvey Foundation (GHF) has been the Dolphinfish Research Program's top sponsor since 2012, helping our program acquire satellite tags to deploy on dolphin throughout the western central Atlantic and Eastern Tropical Pacific Oceans. Now, any registered vehicle owner in Florida can help the GHF raise more funds to be directed toward dolphin research by acquiring the ‘Protect Our Oceans’ specialty license plate. To order, visit any Florida Tax Collector’s Office or license plate tag agency and ask about the Guy Harvey Foundation Protect Our Oceans License Plate.

Fund Our 2023 Tagging and Research Effort
| |
|
A special thanks to everyone who has contributed to our tagging program since the beginning of our 2022/2023 fundraising campaign. With your support, we were able to start 2023 strong and, to date, we have already shipped out 113 tagging kits. Our goal is to distribute 450 kits and 6,000 tags in 2023. While we have an operational budget to begin the year, we still need support to help us fund our online

tagging map (click here), acquire additional satellite tags to deploy on adult dolphinfish and wahoo in 2023, as well as increase our tagging kit and education supplies to meet our growing demand for tagging kits. Our tagging program is at the forefront of educating anglers, advancing discussions and actions surrounding conservation of the species, and gathering additional data to help inform data-driven decision making at the state, federal, and international levels. Help the DRP expand in 2023. Click the icons below to shop or donate to support our program.
