Good Afternoon,
I didn't mean to go silent for the last month or so. As some of you saw, my Dad passed away last month. Most of the below stories are what I had ready before that -- I just wanted to document them here. I'll get back to publishing next week, so I'd like to hear from you! What's new at your radio or TV station? Just click reply and let me know. Thank you!
From the Reading Pile: WKJG/Fort Wayne's "The Sports Rush" slows down, gets creative during pandemic.
From the Reading Pile: How accurately have radio stations been portrayed in TV and movies? Alan Cross rates them.
From the Reading Pile: The Upcoming Journalism School Overhaul.
From the Video Pile: WJHS/Columbia City (new) Studio Tour.
Northeast
Where Are They Now? Former then-Oasis Radio Group/Fort Wayne Production Director and on-air personality Chris Cruise joins Cherry Creek Radio for middays at their KCIN/KIYK in St. George, Utah.
Northcentral
Sound Management's CHR/WNDV (92.9fm, South Bend) morning co-hosts "Irish Dave" O'Connor and his wife Christine both exit. Ms. O'Connor joins the South Bend Police as Media Liaison, while Mr. O'Connor joins a local non-profit (A Rosie Place for Children) as their Director of Community Engagement.
Eastcentral
Jeff Reynolds ("Reyn") exits Brewer's Country/WQLK (96.1fm, Richmond). Mr. Reynolds co-hosted mornings with Sean Lamb at "Kicks 96" since June 2018, after working for Beasley at their WKXC-FM in Augusta, Georgia.

A former Shelbyville radio broadcaster died. Sean Craig was 47 years old and worked twice on 1520am. He first did mornings at what was then WKWH (owned by Rush Shelby Energy, hence the call letters). Mr. Craig returned to 1520am to program and serve as News Director for what's now WSVX, along with one FM translator at that time. After he left WSVX, he and his family moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In Michigan, he joined J&J Broadcasting, programming and doing mornings at WIMI (99.7fm). Here's the complete obituary.
Urban One's Gospel/WTLC (1310am, Indianapolis) wants to do something no AM station has done before. They've applied to the FCC for Experimental Authority to test continuous multicast operation in all-digital MA3 mode. That means they will be all digital (no analog) and will have the ability to operate multiple feeds (think HD2s and HD3s on FM.) WTLC would use a new Nautel NX5 transmitter with the NX HD upgrade premium, Exgine and HDMC+ exciters, which will make the HD2 transmissions a reality. WTLC also has two FM translators: W224DI (92.7fm, Indianapolis) and W236CR (95.1fm, Indianapolis). WTLC told the FCC that the 92.7fm translator provides 50 dBu service to 77.9% of Indianapolis, while the 95.1 translator does so to 68.5% of Indianapolis. Finally, WTLC should begin operating in digital only sometime this summer. Here's the full filing.
Former Indianapolis broadcaster Jim Gerard died; Age 93. In 1962, Mr. Gerard joined WFBM radio (1260am) and then WFBM-TV (Channel 6). At WFBM-TV, he hosted a daily live talk show beginning in 1966. In 1976, the talk show moved to WTTV (Channel 4, Bloomington) where it remained on air until 1987. He was also the face and voice of Hook's Drugs TV and radio commercials. Finally, he is a member of the Indiana Broadcasters Hall of Fame. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Here's the complete obituary.
Last year, Cumulus purchased the three Entercom/Indianapolis radio stations: CHR/WZPL (99.5fm, Greenfield), AC/WNTR (107.9fm, Indianapolis) and Sports/WXNT (1430am, Indianapolis) (IRW 02/21/2019)
The three stations moved out of their 9245 N. Meridian Street facilities (just south of I-465), where they were for 18 years. They're now all broadcasting from the Cumulus building at 6810 N. Shadeland Ave., just south of where I-465 meets I-69 on the northeast side of Indy.
Urban One's WNOW-FM (100.9fm, Speedway) adds Tino Cochino Radio in afternoon drive. (3pm until 7pm)
Where Are They Now? Former WFMS APD Adam "Kash" Kashner stays within Cumulus by joining their WXBM-FM in Pensacola, Florida. There, he programs and does middays at Nash 102.7fm.
Southeast
In 1973, Lee Kelly began working at New Albany High School. There, he helped expand the programming on WNAS (88.1fm, New Albany) from school hours to 24/7. He taught broadcasting until retiring in 2013. He was also the voice of Bulldog athletics. Mr. Kelly died after a brief battle with lung cancer. Indianapolis broadcaster Kent Sterling remembers Mr. Kelly.
Southcentral
Congratulations to Randall Hamm, PD/Gospel PD of Country/WFLQ (100.1fm, French Lick), on his 25 year anniversary at "Q-100." Mr. Hamm hosts the Sunday Morning Gospel Show (since May 1995). In 2013, Singing News nominated him as a Top 5 Small Market Gospel DJ. In 2015, Singing News awarded him their Golden Mic Award.
