Ben Carson's Home Vandalized, Javier Palomárez Stays on WH Diversity Council, Clyburn Staffer Leaves, and Bennie Thompson Gets Hearing
Subscribe
The president is on a Twitter rampage this morning. He’s attacking everything and everybody. He hit the fake news media, Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and citizens who want to see Confederate monuments removed, calling the effort “foolish.” So can you blame three congressional Dems for asking a Yale psychiatrist to consult with them about forming an expert panel to offer legislators advice on assessing Trump’s mental health? It’s happening. Now, about Steve Bannon. Speaking to a left-leaning magazine in what he claimed he thought was an off-the-record phone call, Bannon contradicted Trump’s position on North Korea, criticized colleagues in the administration and mocked Trump officials over trade policy. The Beat DC’s take? No way this was an “oops, did I do that” moment just weeks after Steve Scaramucci made this same alleged faux pas. Bannon is a strategist who ran a media site. He knows how this game is played. What’s your endgame, sir? We’re watching you. And did you guys hear about that major security breach yesterday? Hackers briefly took over several of HBO’s Twitter accounts on Wednesday, including the handle for Game of Thrones! Okay, listen up hackers: you will NOT mess with our Sunday night fanaticism. Twitter is one thing. But you come for the actual TV show, and we’ve got beef. What’s beef? Beef is when you roll no less than 30 deep … beef is when I see you … guaranteed to be in ICU. Oh, but PS, please don’t hack our Twitter, Facebook, or website. We just love to quote Biggie Smalls. We’re not actually about that life. Okay, here’s what we’ve got up for today:
  • Ben Carson’s Virginia home vandalized.
  • Barack Obama is the reigning Twitter champ.
  • Members intro resolution to censure Trump over Charlottesville remarks.
  • Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) says Wells Fargo board change not enough.

  • Bustle has a new Contributing Editor.
  • Congressman James Clyburn (D-SC) staffer heads to CVS.
  • USHCC CEO standing by his man in the White House -- for now.
  • DCCC raises a record amount of campaign funds, while a shake up leaves the DNC short.
  • Trump's personal lawyer forwards email calling Black Lives Matter terrorists.
  • Trump admin ends the program that helps Central American migrants.
  • After pressure from Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS), House to hold hearing on domestic terrorism.
  • U.S. Capitol building has more statues of Confederates than it does of Black people.
  • CBC Chair Cedric Richmond (D-LA) heads to the Vineyard tomorrow. See why in FOMO.

Ben Carson’s Home Vandalized and He Doubles Down on Support of Trump
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson says someone vandalized his home in Vienna, VA, with "hateful rhetoric" about Donald Trump. “We were out of town, but other kind, embarrassed neighbors cleaned up most of the mess before we returned.” On Monday, while touring flood-ravaged areas of Louisiana, Carson called the controversy over Trump’s response celebrating white supremacists “little squabbles” that are “being blown out of proportion” and echoed the president’s equating of white nationalist hate groups with counterprotesters. “When he talks about the fact that hatred and bigotry and these things are unacceptable,” Carson said, “he’s talking about everybody. ... You’d think he was saying that hatred and bigotry are unacceptable except by neo-Nazis. We really have got to begin to think more logically and stop trying to stir up controversy and start concentrating on the issues that threaten us and threaten our children.” More here.
Obama has Six of Top Ten Most-Liked Tweets of All Time
While Donald Trump may be a more prolific Twitter user, he’s waaay far behind the reigning Twitter champ: Barack Obama. A list of the tweets that have received the most likes (or the now-defunct 'favorite') was compiled, and the former POTUS holds six of the ten spots between his personal account and ones the POTUS account made when he was president. While his Charlottesville quote is at 3.7 million (and counting), other top tweets of his include several made on his last day in office and his tweet honoring Senator John McCain (R-AZ) after he was diagnosed with cancer. Joining Obama in the top ten are Ariana Grande, Ellen DeGeneres, Linkin Park, and Hillary Clinton. More here from Fortune.

Waters Tells Wells Fargo a New Board Chairman is Not Enough
On Wednesday, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) told Wells Fargo that a change in its board chairmanship was not a sufficient enough response to address the continued scandals that have been unearthed at the bank. Waters has vowed to introduce legislation that will break up banks like Wells Fargo that she says routinely break the law and harm consumers. “This superficial change in leadership at Wells Fargo isn't enough to restore the trust and confidence of the American public. While Elizabeth Duke is replacing Stephen Sanger as Chairman, Duke was a member of the Wells Fargo Board during numerous scandals and failed to rein in the bank's rampant consumer abuses. It is time that Congress recognize Wells Fargo for what it is -- a recidivist institution that has committed millions of crimes and shows no remorse,” Waters said. More here.
Watson Coleman, Jayapal, and Nadler Intro Resolution to Censure Trump Over Charlottesville
Congresswomen Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), along with Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), announced a resolution of censure against Donald Trump for his August 15th remarks reasserting earlier comments that “both sides” were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville, VA, and excusing the behavior of participants in the ‘Unite the Right’ rally. The resolution censuring and condemning Trump is set to be introduced on Friday, August 18th, when the House returns in pro forma session. The resolution also condemns the president for employing people with ties to white supremacist movements in the White House, such as Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka and urges Trump to "fire any and all White House advisors who have urged him to cater to the alt-Right movement in the United States.” More here.

Clyburn Staffer Heads to CVS
After 12 years on Capitol Hill, Ashli Palmer is stepping down from her post as Policy Director for Assistant Democratic Leader Congressman James Clyburn (R-SC). The Spelman College graduate is heading to CVS to assume the role of Director of Government Affairs. “I’ve had the privilege of working for Assistant Leader James E. Clyburn and former Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt.  I couldn’t have asked for better bosses or mentors and I am grateful to have met such wonderful friends and colleagues during my time here,” the South Carolina native said in an email to friends. Palmer also previously worked for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a public policy think tank where her work included creating a legislative resource guide on budget and farm bill issues and after that, she served as Chief of Staff at the Department of Agriculture. USHCC Head Says He’s Not Leaving Presidential Diversity Council ... Yet
Javier Palomárez, President & CEO of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, has joined the growing chorus of community leaders and elected officials calling on the president to fire senior advisor Stephen Bannon. In a statement, Palomárez -- a member of the president’s National Diversity Council -- said, “Denouncing white supremacy without equivocation and without reservation should have been a no-brainer for President Trump. Sadly, it seems clear that influential members of his administration were more worried about winning votes through dog whistles and winks and nods to the most evil elements of our society than in maintaining the moral authority of the presidency.” Despite the statement, Palomárez told MSNBC’s Morning Joe that he is sticking around -- for now. “This is not about serving a president, this is about serving the 4.2 million Hispanic-owned firms that collectively contribute over 668 billion dollars to our American economy. Our job is not done yet. My focus is on immigration reform, on healthcare reform, on tax reform. Those are the issues that I want to get back to. Business has taken a backseat to bigotry with this administration and we have to focus on the job at hand.” Click on the video to see the entire interview and see his full statement here.
Trump’s Lawyer Forwards Email Calling Black Lives Matter Terrorist Group
John Dowd, Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, on Wednesday, forwarded an email to conservative journalists, government officials and friends that echoed secessionist Civil War propaganda and declared that the group Black Lives Matter “has been totally infiltrated by terrorist groups.” The NYT reports that the email’s author, Jerome Almon, runs several websites alleging government conspiracies and arguing that the F.B.I. has been infiltrated by Islamic terrorists. Almon blamed Black Lives Matter for deadly violence against police last year in Texas and Louisiana. He also said in his email to Dowd that the protesters should “go back to the ghettos and do raise their children and rebuild places like Detroit.” But ready for the kicker? Almon is Black! Yep -- that’s his picture. Back when he called himself CEO of Detroit-based Murdercap Records, he unsuccessfully sued the Canadian government, the State Department and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for $900 million over claims of discrimination. The suit, apparently prepared for Almon by the chief of Detroit's ACLU, accused the defendants of "wholesale profiling" of rap artists and African Americans. How do we suppose they get these dudes to sink? Get more on this whacky email here from the NYT.

DCCC Raises $6 Million
Roll Call reports that the DCCC raised more than $6 million in July, roughly $2 million more than it did in July 2015. The average online donation was $17. So far this year, more than 200,000 donors have contributed to the committee for the first time. The DCCC raised more than $66 million in the first seven months of the year. At the same point in 2015, the last off-year, the committee had raised roughly $41 million. It currently has $23 million in cash on hand. Congressman Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), the chairman, has benefited heavily from a Trump administration and new approaches leading the campaign arm of the House. More here.
DNC Fundraising Falls Short Amid Infighting and Staffing Issues
Months of infighting and staffing challenges have left the the DNC’s coffers half as full as those of the RNC. The Hill reports a money gap of about $32 million. Over the first six months of 2017, the DNC raised $38.2 million compared with the $75.4 million raised by the RNC. As of June 30, the DNC has just under $7.5 million in the bank and has $3 million in debt. The RNC? They were sitting on almost $45 million. Staffing has contributed to the lag in fundraising; the DNC slashed its workforce after Election Day and has not fully rebuilt its fundraising operations. In a statement, DNC Chairman Tom Pérez said “At the DNC, we are still building up our team, including hiring fundraising staff, and making sure every aspect of our organization is moving in lockstep. We’re confident that our team will raise the resources needed as we head into 2018 and beyond.” Read more here.
Alabama Mayoral Candidate Randall Woodfin Aims to Make Birmingham a Progressive City
The Root profiles Birmingham, AL mayoral candidate Randall Woodfin, calling his candidacy a sign of progress for the South. The 36-year-old Morehouse graduate is running as a progressive candidate, and his major contender appears to be the incumbent 68-year-old Mayor William Bell. The two will face off in a primary (as will 11 other candidates). Bell has served in a Birmingham elected office since 1979. More than 30% of the city’s residents live below the poverty line, an issue Woodfin claims Bell is doing little to address. Bell’s team counters that in an email to The Root, saying that his administration has “spent more money on cleaning up and revitalizing neighborhoods than ANY administration before.” So far, Woodfin’s campaign has raised $310,611.15 and has garnered national attention and support. Former Bernie Sanders surrogate Nina Turner says Woodfin’s election would mean a lot for the progressive movement. More here.

After Pressure From Bennie Thompson, House to Hold Hearing on Domestic Terrorism
In a letter to Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS), House Homeland Security Committee chairman Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX) announced that the committee would discuss the violence in Charlottesville as domestic terrorism at a September 12th hearing. McCaul made the announcement in the response to Thompson. Yesterday, we told you about Thompson and fellow Congressman Lou Correa’s (D-CA) efforts to push for a hearing on hate groups and domestic terror. Now, the full committee will meet and the heads of the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Counterterrorism Center have all been asked to attend. “Racial intolerance deserves no place in America, and it is imperative that we find ways to rid our nation of the scourge of white supremacism. I am grateful for your dedication to protecting the American people from the ever-growing number of threats confronting the United States, and I look forward to discussing the matters raised in your letter further as we continue our efforts to find bipartisan solutions and keep our homeland safe,” McCaul wrote to Thompson. The Hill has more.
U.S. Capitol has Three Times as Many Confederate Statues as It Does of Black People
Following the unrest in Charlottesville, the calls for the removal of Confederate monuments and symbols continue to grow. As The Beat DC reported yesterday, some members, such as Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS), have started to sound the alarm about the Confederate statues in the U.S. Capitol. And Wednesday night, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) tweeted, "I will be introducing a bill to remove Confederate statues from the US Capitol building. This is just one step. We have much work to do." Well, they have a good reason. According to records maintained by the Architect of the Capitol, the WaPo found that there are three times as many statues of Confederates than statues of Black Americans in the entire complex. In Statuary Hall alone, 12 of the statues memorialize people who were Confederate politicians or soldiers. Not a single Black American is present in that collection. Two states -- Mississippi and South Carolina -- are represented exclusively by Confederate figures. Since the 2000 law passed by Congress allowing states to switch out statues, Alabama replaced Confederate officer Jabez Curry's statue with one of Helen Keller. Florida is in the process of removing Confederate general Edmund Kirby Smith but no replacement has been chosen. WaPo has more here.

Phoenix Mayor Wants Trump to Stay Home
Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign-style rally in Phoenix on Tuesday. The visit also comes as Trump has hinted a pardon for an Arizona Republican, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, 85, who has been convicted of criminal contempt after a judge found he had defied a court order intended to stamp out his signature immigration patrols. Arpaio is scheduled to be sentenced October 5th and could spend up to six months in jail. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton wrote in a statement Wednesday he was disappointed to learn of Trump's visit so close to the violent events in Charlottesville. The mayor called on Trump to delay the visit. "If President Trump is coming to Phoenix to announce a pardon for former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, then it will be clear that his true intent is to enflame emotions and further divide our nation," the statement said. More here.
Homeland Security Ends Program Aimed at Reunifying Central American Migrants
As of yesterday, the Trump admin ended part of an Obama-era program that provided certain young Central American migrants the opportunity to apply for refugee status and reunite with their parents. This change to the Central American Minors Refugee/Parole program affects thousands of children who were given conditional parole status, putting them in danger of deportation and a return to the violence in countries from which they fled. The Department of Homeland Security said future parole “will only be issued on a case-by-case basis and only where the applicant demonstrates an urgent humanitarian or a significant public benefit as a reason for parole and that applicant merits a favorable exercise of discretion.” More here from the NYT.

Jamal Simmons Weighs in on Charlottesville: "The President is a White Supremacist Sympathizer"
In an essay for The Root, The Beat DC’s Jamal Simmons explores the events in Charlottesville through his connection to the region -- his family history. Simmons says it’s the responsibility of all who stand against white supremacy to raise their voice. “This line that has been drawn is not a partisan line. It’s civilizational. Jewish, Christian, Muslim, LGBT, black, white, Latinx and Asian Americans stood up to the white supremacists and neo-Nazis on Saturday. Republican Sens. Marco Rubio and Orrin Hatch spoke up without delay. Each of us who believes in the promise of America has the responsibility to express a vote of “no confidence” in a president who resists standing up against dictators, demagogues and white supremacists.” Read the full piece here.
