Howdy! I'm Bianca, filling in for Ryan this week while he's away. I'm out in Seattle visiting family, and yesterday we stopped by the MoPOP museum and saw the bold Beats + Rhymes hip-hop exhibit.
It sent me straight back to thinking about Austin's hip-hop story, and the show that's been telling it every Saturday night since 2017: The Breaks. Confucius and Fresh are both born and raised in Austin, and what they've built — a show, a community, a space for Central Texas hip-hop — is worth celebrating any week.
Today is Juneteenth, and there's no better time to spotlight the artists and hosts championing Austin's Black music scene. If you're looking for a way to mark the day, The Groove Temple presents Together Vol. 6, a Juneteenth boogie featuring R&B, hip-hop, and karaoke at Central Machine Works. DJ Tigre kicks off the night with a DJ set, followed by live performances by AllisianaMiché, StormShadow and OGJINXD, hosted by Queen Deelah and Joe B. Admission is free. It runs tonight from 7 to 11 p.m.

Austin’s Touch Girl Apple Blossom crafts songs that hit straight at the most tender part of your heart. The band’s new album, Graceful, is a collection of jangly, nostalgic pop songs that feel lived-in and intimate.
Guitarists Olivia Garner and John Morales met playing in a country band and bonded over a shared love of twee music, which inspired them to get together and write some songs. Bassist Dustin Pilkington and drummer Charles Powell joined shortly after, and the band began playing shows around Austin.
In 2023, they hit the studio with Max Deems and tracked four songs onto an 8-track recorder that would become the debut Touch Girl Apple Blossom EP. Shortly after the EP’s release, the band returned to the studio with Deems to start work on what would become their first full-length album, Graceful, out now on K Recs.

The Bullock Museum’s Music Under the Star free outdoor concert series continues tonight, June 19 at 7 pm. Head out to the Texas Capitol Mall for performances by the “Empress of Austin Soul” Tameca Jones and high-energy blues rock band Rochelle & the Sidewinders.
Next Friday, June 26, Alejandro Escovedo will headline the final night of Music Under the Star, with Vallejo opening at 7 pm for a night of Latin-influenced rock.
Camp chairs and blankets are welcome. Food will be available for purchase from local food trucks and The Star Cafe. Paid parking is available in the Bullock Museum garage.
