Sparkathon Retreat and Found in Translation Seed Funding Competition Stimulate Translational Science at MCC! |
On February 7, 2024, the MCC-Office of Translational Science (MCC-OTS) held its inaugural translational science retreat, SPARKATHON, in MCC’s Goldberg Auditorium featuring a Keynote Presentation by Dr. Himisha Beltran (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) on successes and failures in translational research in the context of her work on mechanisms of resistance in prostate cancer, a fascinating panel discussion highlighting faculty insights and expertise on translational processes, noteworthy rapid-fire talks, impactful networking sessions, an important presentation on COE’s Community-Scientist Program and how our researchers can engage, and a FOUND in TRANSLATION (FiT) Concept Seed Funding Competition, all of which sparked ideas, conversation, collaboration, and networking among researchers, clinicians, and community scientists.
Retreat organizers express their gratitude to everyone who played a part in the success of the retreat – our keynote speaker, panelists, moderators, presenters, judges, and event staff – thank you all!
Congratulations to the Winning Team of the FiT Concept Seed Funding Competition:
Title: Illuminating host-microbiome relationships in triple-negative breast cancer using spatial transcriptomics and long-read metagenomics
Investigators:
Omar Din, PhD (Post-doctoral Scholar)
Kay Yeung, MD (Assistant Clinical Professor)
Rob Knight, PhD (Professor)
And a huge shout-out to all of the teams presenting concepts and the MCC-OTS Liaisons who nominated the compelling translational concepts to be pitched at the retreat – Dr. Sarah Blair (Breast), Dr. Pratibha Binder (Gynecology), Dr. Christina Jamieson (Genitourinary), and Dr. Soo Park (Cutaneous) – we appreciate your engagement and participation!
We are looking forward to another dynamic retreat in 2025!

Cancer Therapeutics Training (CT2) Training Program |
The CT2 Program is open to both MDs and PhDs and provides an intensive 2-year period of research and training in the development of novel cancer therapeutics or diagnostics at the Moores Cancer Center. Trainees not only execute a research program under the direction of a member of the faculty of this Comprehensive Cancer Center, but also participate in coursework, seminars, and lectures. Graduates of the program are prepared to transition to leadership roles in cancer therapeutics development in either an academic or commercial environment. Applications must be submitted by March 15, 2024.

FEATURED FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES |
These are one-year competitive awards to UC San Diego faculty to enhance collaborations between MCC members and HWSPH faculty. Each proposal can have up to two PIs. For the PIs or Co-Is of the proposals, one must be a member of Cancer Control at MCC and one must have a faculty or project/research scientist appointment in HWSPH. The PI can be both an MCC member and have an appointment in HWSPH to fulfill this requirement. A total of $30,000 is available for this funding cycle. Budgets of either $15,000 or $30,000 may be proposed and one or two proposals may be selected for funding.
Deadline: March 18, 2024

The Reach Grant seeks to remove barriers by providing support for important pre-clinical hypothesis-driven research projects that are necessary to move a study from the pre- clinical arena into a clinical trial. The goal of this award is to support translational studies that will result in a phase 1 and/or 2 clinical trial, two to three years from the project end date. The requested budget should be in proportion to the scope of the proposed project and should be for direct costs of $250,000 USD or below over 2 years. A maximum of $125,000 in total direct costs may be requested per year.
Full Proposal Due: March 25, 2024
|
Pre-pilot project funding of up to $40K ($20K per institution) is intended to support UCSD/SDSU teams to implement small-scale activities with the expectation that preliminary findings will support proposals for additional funding. Projects must reflect a true collaboration between SDSU and UCSD co-leaders, and must address one or more of CREATE's priority cancer and cancer disparities areas.
Submission Deadline: May 8, 2024
