General Secretary (Chief Executive)

Baltimore Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (BYM) is seeking a General Secretary. This executive position provides spirit-led, strategic leadership to Baltimore Yearly Meeting. The charge includes planning, supervising staff, raising funds, and monitoring programs, finances, and property.

The General Secretary works to strengthen a culture of consultation, accountability, outreach, and inclusion, in keeping with BYM’s commitment to be an antiracist faith community.

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated commitment to the Quaker beliefs and practices that guide the work of Baltimore Yearly Meeting, demonstrate success working within an organization that includes committee decision-making and consultative processes, and at least five years of experience with staff supervision, fiscal oversight, and program administration. The role requires excellent interpersona skills, and evening and weekend meetings and events.

The Baltimore Yearly Meeting office is located in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Once it is safe to do so, we anticipate the General Secretary returning to the office on a full-time basis.

Baltimore Yearly Meeting Welcomes Dylan Phillips as Catoctin Quaker Camp Caretaker!

Dylan attended Catoctin as a camper and "quickly fell in love with the space." He has attended Annual Session for many years, and previously has served as a clerk of Young Adult Friends. More recently he assisted in the repairs to the Catoctin Infirmary and is excited to assist with our ongoing rentals of that building as well as the entire camp this spring.

General Secretary Search Committee Update

The General Secretary Search Committee has met three times thus far, and welcomes Ted Heck (Richmond) as our 7th member. Though we experienced some delays due to the holidays, the position has been posted online in various Quaker and non-Quaker sites, via other Yearly Meetings and Quaker organizations, and David Etheridge arranged to have the job announced on a DC-area gospel radio show! The deadline to apply has been extended to February 28th.

We developed a scoring rubric to apply to reduce bias in evaluating candidates (you can read more about hiring rubrics here) and are presently mapping out our interview process. BYM Friends can help us by continuing to share the job opportunity with individuals who might be a good fit and holding the committee in the Light as we do our work.

Workshop Proposals for Annual Session 2021 are being accepted now!

It may seem early to be thinking about an August workshop, but we need time to review proposals with Program Committee at our March 8 meeting, as well as get a copy for inclusion in the Interchange.

The theme statement for this year's sessions is: Seeking Wholeness: Knowing our Shadow and Our Light. We welcome workshop proposals addressing this theme, or on other timely topics of general interest to Friends. If you or someone you know would be interested in presenting a workshop this year:

This column is prepared by the BYM Working Group on Racism (WGR) and sent to the designated liaisons at each Monthly and Preparative Meeting for publication in their newsletter or other means of dissemination. The WGR meets most months on the first Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, at various Meetings. If you would like to attend, on a regular or a drop-in basis, contact clerk David Etheridge.

Baltimore Yearly Meeting Educational Grants Available!

The BYM Educational Grants Committee is accepting applications for the 2021-2022 academic year from members or regular attenders of Monthly Meetings associated with BYM (or from their children). Grants may be applied to expenses associated with undergraduate attendance at accredited post-secondary educational institutions. Attendance may be either full- or parttime. Grants will be awarded based on multiple criteria, including financial need and the Committee’s assessment of an applicant’s statement of purpose and its consistency with Friends’ testimonies. Grant limits are up to $2,000 per grantee per year, for a cumulative total of $8,000. Applications will be accepted between January 1, 2021 and April 23, 2021. Award decisions will be made in May and notifications sent by early June. As work camps and other similar experiences did for previous generations of Friends, QVS offers the opportunity to orient young adults to whole lives committed to service and justice, grounded and sustained by their faith.

Updated Marriage Provisions of Faith and Practice

The latest draft revision to the marriage provisions of Faith and Practice prepared by the Faith and Practice Committee, dated February 21, 2021, is available here. This draft is being provided to Monthly Meetings and other BYM groups for comment, and will be available in the Faith and Practice Section of the BYM website. The Faith and Practice Committee email address is fandp@bym-rsf.org.

Since April 2020, two earlier drafts of this document have been sent to Monthly Meetings and other BYM groups for input, and the comments received have been faithfully incorporated. At this point in the revision process, the Faith and Practice Committee will only accept substantive comments from Monthly Meetings and other BYM groups regarding matters that would prevent approval of this section of Faith and Practice. Deadline for comments will be May 14th (before the June Interim Meeting). At Sixth Month 2021 Interim Meeting on June 12, an advance copy will be presented (in preparation for second reading at Annual Session). Any substantive issues that the Faith and Practice Committee cannot resolve on its own will be referred to the Yearly Meeting officers to determine next steps.
