Dear Traveler,
In this issue, among many other things we would like to unveil some of Europe's underrated charms. So with that, we welcome you back to the world of slow travel!  As we mentioned in our 'Go Slow' issue a while back, slow travel is all about savoring the journey and not just the destination.
Having respectively experienced Massa Lubrense, Italy and Toyama, Japan this year, Anca and I appreciate exploring less touristy destinations in some of our favorite countries.  These escapes gave us some inspiration on other location “swaps” where it’s about savoring genuine experiences, connecting with local culture, and discovering hidden gems often overshadowed by more famous, bustling counterparts such as:
Swap Florence for Lecce
Florence’s Renaissance splendor is undeniable, but its crowds can overwhelm. For a quieter, authentic Italian experience, visit Lecce in Puglia—the “Florence of the South.” Lecce dazzles with baroque architecture, Roman ruins (including an amphitheater in the city center), and vibrant piazzas. Enjoy local artisan workshops, relaxed exploration, and the charm of nearby Puglian towns and beaches.
Valencia, Spain: Mediterranean Magic
Escape Barcelona’s bustle for Valencia’s laid-back allure. Discover cutting-edge architecture at the City of Arts and Sciences, Spain’s second-largest art gallery, and the birthplace of paella. Stroll through the Turia Gardens, relax on sunny beaches, and immerse yourself in a city rich with Roman, Moorish, and Spanish history.
Milos, Greece: Serene Island Escape
Skip crowded Santorini for Milos, a volcanic island with over 70 unique beaches and dramatic landscapes. Explore ancient theaters, charming fishing villages, and savor fresh seafood in a tranquil, authentic setting.
Lyon, France: Gastronomic Haven
Trade Parisian crowds for Lyon, France’s culinary capital. Wander its UNESCO-listed historic center, visit world-class museums, and dine at Michelin-starred restaurants or cozy bouchons. Enjoy lower prices, fewer tourists, and easy train access.
Bruges, Belgium: Venice Without the Crowds
Craving Venice’s romance but not the crowds? Bruges, the “Venice of the North,” offers medieval charm, winding canals, and a UNESCO-listed old town. Climb the Belfry for views, take a canal boat ride, and indulge in chocolates, waffles, and local beers—all in a fairytale setting.

We are excited to be adding a new feature to our newsletter -'Beyond The Gate'! Each month we will share an in-depth review of various airport lounges - to include any special features or amenities, as well as the pros and cons. To that end, our first review is the new Chase Sapphire Lounge, right in our own backyard, at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).
Top left to bottom right: Bruce and wifey at the signature bar area, Beer Garden, Clover Club cocktail, lounge area, game room.
Step into a new era of airport luxury at the Chase Sapphire Lounge in Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). From the moment you're greeted by friendly staff, you'll discover a sprawling, 20,000-square-foot haven designed for every type of traveler.

Unwind, Work, and Play
Beyond the signature bar area with its diverse seating and luxurious lighting, you'll find dedicated zones to suit your needs. Catch up on emails in the private work area complete with a conference table and phone booths, or relax in the cozy relaxation space.

Philly-Inspired Perks
What truly sets this lounge apart are its unique-to-Philly amenities:

Game & Memorabilia Room: Dive into retro arcade games, enjoy multi-screen gaming (Nintendo Switch included!), and admire a wall adorned with Philly sports memorabilia.
Beer Garden: A first for Chase lounges, this "Fishtown-inspired" beer garden offers tarmac views, an exclusive menu of local bar food (think soft pretzels and Philly cheesesteak sliders), and brews from Yards Brewing Co. and Love City Brewing.

Indulge and Recharge
The Sapphire Reserve lounge doesn't skimp on upscale amenities:
  • Wellness Center: Recharge in one of six private meditation and rest pods, or treat yourself to a complimentary facial treatment in one of two spa rooms (reservations highly recommended!).
  • Luxurious Shower Suites: Freshen up with premium products and all the essentials.
  • Exceptional Dining: Savor a complimentary menu featuring a partnership with Middle Child Clubhouse, offering signature items like the Shopsin Club sandwich and Sapphire burger. Enjoy both buffet and extensive à la carte options, easily ordered via QR code.
  • Curated Drink Menu: Beyond the beer garden, explore a wine list by Parcelle, unique Philly-inspired cocktails, and non-alcoholic selections from local roaster Elixr Coffee. Gluten-free options are also available.
Good to Know
While this departure-only lounge offers an unparalleled experience with everything on the menu included, be aware that its location between Terminals D and E might require a longer walk from other terminals, and it can get crowded during peak travel times.

How to access: Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders receive complimentary access (along with 2 guests for free) as well as a Priority Pass membership which provides access to over 1,300 lounges worldwide. While the card has a robust annual fee of $550.00, in addition to the lounge access which is well worth it especially if you travel out of PHL frequently, it comes with a welcome bonus of 60,000 reward points after qualified spend and also includes a $300.00 annual travel credit and a $120.00 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit every four years.
