The “Back of the Dragon” route in southwestern Virginia.
|
“Fall is the South’s prime road trip season, especially for the sports car and motorcycle enthusiasts drawn to sinewy mountain curves,” writes G&G contributor Caroline Eubanks in her guide to four zig-zagging routes. “The Tail of the Dragon in the Great Smoky Mountains is one famous curvy route,” she adds, but it’s not the only scenic Southern stretch named after the mythical creature. Read about the others.

Craig Martin and Earl Bridges walk “the Good Road” in Asheville.
|
CONSERVATION SPOTLIGHT: Knowing feel-good stories are in demand these days, Craig Martin and Earl Bridges launched PBS’s The Good Road, a television series that travels the world to spotlight change makers and philanthropists. Not surprisingly, it landed in Asheville, North Carolina, this season. With its thriving arts scene, unparalleled natural beauty, and collective heart for conservation, Asheville has been a beloved Southern destination for generations, and as The Good Road confirms, it’s the people in the mountain city who make all the difference. In partnership with Explore Asheville and G&G’s Champions of Conservation, G&G produced three mini episodes featuring editor in chief David DiBenedetto and a cast of phenomenal Asheville conservationists. Watch The Good Road’s “Asheville, NC - The French Broad” and three mini episodes.

Athens, Georgia. Although I’m a Clemson alum and love the Tigers, I can’t deny that Athens is one of the most quintessential college towns out there. The charming architecture, plethora of local shops and restaurants, and pervasive love of the Georgia Bulldogs are just a few of the reasons Athens is so special. Here are a few places to add to your agenda the next time you’re in Dawg territory:
|
-
Pauley’s Crepe Bar: My best friend (and hostess for the weekend) and I were lucky to snag a bar seat, a feat practically unheard of on a Friday night. We caught up over Moscow mules and spicy margaritas while munching on flatbread chips and Pauley’s delicious Comfort Dip. The atmosphere is upbeat, and it was the perfect starting point for the rest of our night.
-
Avid Bookshop: After a quick bakery visit for some Saturday-morning sustenance, we popped into this shop in the idyllic Five Points sector. It’s one of the most adorable local bookstores I’ve ever visited. Its children’s book section had me wishing I was still kids’ menu–eligible, but the fiction section for more mature folks also spoke to me, so everything worked out. I left with a book and a top-tier browsing experience.
-
Mother Lode Athens: Plan to spend at least a few hours here because its name speaks the truth: There are countless treasure troves in this spacious store that bursts with vintage and consignment gems. Whether you’re a vinyl fanatic, hunting for a throwback college football jersey or one-of-a-kind piece of furniture, or looking to revamp your wardrobe in a sustainable way, this is the place to go.
