A Thoroughbred grazes at Keeneland.

Autumn in Bluegrass Country |
Famous for its bourbon, bluegrass, and breeding farms full of Thoroughbreds, Lexington, Kentucky, is arguably at its best in the fall. For one thing, racing season kicks off at Keeneland, though the historic venue—as G&G contributor Tom Wilmes describes—is the only racetrack in North America open to the public every day of the year. The city isn’t just a hot spot for equine enthusiasts, though. Scroll down to read more about Lexington, including a look at its diverse food scene and the nearby 29,000-acre gorge known as Kentucky’s Grand Canyon.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FLORIDA
|

SUNNY STAYS: In New Smyrna Beach, Florida, there are as many styles of lodging as there are varieties of birds skimming the shores. You’ll find whimsically appointed cottages steps from the sand next to modern oceanfront condos with picture windows facing the horizon. Turn the corner and you’re as likely to encounter laid-back fish camps (especially near the famous saltwater flats) as you are luxury private homes with saltwater pools behind the dunes. All that is to say, New Smyrna Beach has accommodations to suit every style and budget. Mother Nature set the stage with generous coastal beauty; you need only select your favorite set design. Find your New Smyrna Beach stay.

Park City, Utah. It was a milestone birthday, and I wanted to celebrate it in a destination known for epic hikes, water adventures, and comfort foods. My reasoning? There’s no better way to age than to unleash childlike wonders in the great outdoors. My family and I decided on Park City, where spring precipitation gives way to verdant and exceptional summers. Some notes from the trip:
|
-
Creature comforts: On our drive from Park City to nearby Deer Valley, nimble deer ambled along the mountainside stretch. We stayed at the impressive Goldener Hirsch, where we feasted on farm-to-table meals from its culinary team, helmed by chef Nicolas Lebas, a former Georgia resident who was named 2019 Culinarian of the Year by the Georgia Hotel & Lodging Association. The fuel proved vital as we started our adventures, which began with exploring the trails outside the hotel’s doors.
- Splish splash: After a good night’s rest, we woke early to catch a shuttle for whitewater rafting at Weber River’s Class II rapids. With jutting rocks and moderate dips, the two-hour trip was adventurous for thrill seekers like my husband and me yet docile enough for our kids.
-
Southern sips: Despite the summery green setting in the high desert, it was a visit to an establishment rooted in the South that hugged us in comfort. Cocreated by a biochemist after a visit to Kentucky, High West Distillery crafts award-winning small-batch whiskeys and vodkas. Its indoor-outdoor tasting room, filled with robust woodwork, overlooks the quiet region of Wanship, whose small-town charm made our newfound terrain even more inviting.
