April 2022 UP Parent and Family Newsletter
July 2022
Dear UP families,
Counting the days until your Pilot returns to campus next month? Are you nervous, yet excited for your first-year student to leave home? Summer has been a busy time here on The Bluff as we prepare to welcome students to campus, and for all that will make this academic year a memorable one. This issue is filled with helpful information for both returning and new Pilot families as you ready yourselves for an empty (or nearly empty!) nest next month.
Support from parents during college is a direct connection to success both inside and outside the classroom. Whether you’re a seasoned Pilot Parent or new to the Pilot Family, please know that there is support for YOU during your student’s college journey. Reach out to me at parents@up.edu with any questions or concerns you have.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS WEBINARS ARE BACK!
The first of our three Parents as Partners webinars starts on July 19! This series of informational webinars will offer insights into understanding financial aid & student accounts, life on campus, and your student's health and wellness during their time at UP. While designed for our incoming first-year families, these webinars will be helpful for parents of current students in all class years.  Get the webinar dates, details, and registration information here.
DEMYSTIFYING THE MEAL PLAN PROCESS
This month, we take a closer look at the Meal Plan process. All students living on campus must purchase a Meal Plan, but signing up for the right one before ever setting foot on campus can be tricky. How do you know if you've got the right plan? What happens to meal points at the end of the semester? Click here for tips and a handy spending chart provided by our food service provider, Bon Appetit.
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT JOB LIST OPENS AUGUST 1
In addition to learning valuable skills, getting an on-campus job is a great way for students to familiarize themselves with the UP community and meet people. Learn more about how you can support your student in preparing for an on-campus job, and what documents they will need to bring with them as part of the hiring process. Students can visit the Student Employment page starting August 1 to view current job openings on campus.
2022 NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
New Student Orientation starts August 25 for students and their families. Don't miss this chance to meet the UP community, fellow Pilot Parents, and learn about important University services and resources.
Remind your student to complete their pre-arrival orientation course before they arrive to campus in August. We can't wait to meet you!
STUDY ABROAD APPLICATIONS DUE NOVEMBER 15
Early planning is very important if your student plans to study abroad. Applications are due by November 15. You and your student can learn more by watching this video, exploring study abroad program options, and meeting with a Program Counselor (academic advisor) and Study Abroad Office staff. Through the promotion of the value of international learning experiences worldwide, the UP Study Abroad Office is committed to advancing conversations around privilege, access, reciprocity, and the importance of embodying gratitude as our students seek to learn about themselves within the context of their host environment abroad. This vision is the basis of the UP Study Abroad #BeGlobalBeGrateful campaign.
SAVE THE DATE FOR JUNIOR & SENIOR FAMILY WEEKEND!
Come celebrate with us as we bring back this treasured family experience! Parents and families of Juniors and Seniors are invited to join us Friday November 4 through Sunday November 6 for a weekend of food, fun and a few new surprises on the agenda. More details and registration information for this fun-filled weekend will be shared in future newsletters and via social media.
THE BEST PACKING LIST FOR WHAT TO BRING TO CAMPUS

You can find hundreds of college packing lists on the internet, but the Office of Residence Life offers a comprehensive list of items to bring, and a reminder of what to leave at home. Use these lists as guidelines for the best ways to make the most of a tiny living space. Packing in boxes that can be flattened are a great idea; larger suitcases can be stored in the residence hall trunk rooms, under beds, or on top of movable wardrobe units.
