A Time of Rebirth and Renewal
I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude and excitement for my new role within Knight Nation! I have successfully and safely made the cross-country trek from Illinois to Portland and have spent the past few weeks getting settled and learning my way around town. I’m busy learning about our current systems and structures, getting to know staff, asking questions, and gaining knowledge about what sets us apart from other Catholic schools in the area. While I still have a lot to learn, I can say without hesitation that the staff I have met and talked with are some of the most dedicated, loyal, loving souls I have ever encountered. It takes a special person to commit to a life of serving others, and I cannot wait to continue my life of service with the DLSNC family.
In a time of rebirth and renewal, we will engage our students, families, and greater community members in meaningful and open conversations about where we've been during the scariest 18 months in recent history, where we are now, and where we hope to be throughout our first year back with in-person learning and beyond. I am happy to be able to lead this charge with the new Vice Principal of Curriculum & Instruction, Cary Tyler, as well as James Broadous II, Vice Principal for Student Life. Cary joins Knight Nation with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of education (even as a DLSNC teacher ten years ago!), and I know all of us together will make a great team.

DLSNC Students Continue to Make the Most of Summer
The learning and growing doesn’t stop at DLSNC! Interesting summer experiences were plentiful for the Knights this year, including:
Jada Monk '24 and Gregorio Madrid-Hommes '24, attended a 10-day summer sailing program with World Ocean School. Using a historic schooner built in 1925, the school takes student groups on voyages along the eastern seaboard from Boston to New York. Students live on the Roseway, learning skills such as sailing, navigation, and knot tying, and also do a variety of shore visits throughout the trip. Fun (team building, sampling marine organisms, fishing, swimming) and chores (cooking and cleaning) are also part of the mix. Jada and Gregorio went through a rigorous application and interview process for scholarships which covered their travel and program costs.
Elliana McKinney ‘23, who attended (virtually) a law class at Georgetown as well as a journalism class at Boston University, was able to bring focus to her career goals through her summer experiences. “Taking these classes helped strengthen my love of journalism, plus I learned that I don’t want to be an attorney any longer,” Elliana explained. “The classes were two weeks each, and one of the weeks they overlapped, so I had a lot of deadlines. Learning how to complete assignments with a tight deadline made me excited about furthering my education to get to my goal of being an investigative journalist.”

Ambassador Board Hosts Successful Outdoor Summer Event
DLSNC offers big thanks to our Ambassador Board (AB) for its hugely successful summer fundraiser party. Led by newly appointed AB Board Chair Chrissy Gross along with AB Board members Dawn Myers and Emily Witt, the evening featured an incredible outdoor venue, spot-on drinks, tasty food donated from ¿Por Qué No?, perfect weather, and a simply spectacular bandThe Oscillatorsa dynamic group of musically-gifted Nike accountants.
The event raised awareness in the community about DLSNC’s mission, exceeded its fundraising goals (earning over $8,000) through ticket sales and a silent auction, and was an amazing night of fun! Thank you to the Ambassador Board for its work in making this event a huge success. And thank you to all of you who attended and supported Knight Nation!

NWESI Shares Employer Perspective on the Corporate Work Study Program
Marina Garcia, Marketing & Communications Specialist, NWESI (NorthWest Engineering Service, Inc.)
Given that our company is one that loves education, skill-building, and STEM subjects, NWESI president Tom Prevish was thrilled when Shiels Obletz Johnsen Managing Director/Partner Francesca Gambetti brought DLSNC’s Corporate Work Study Program to his attention. NWESI embarked on this new partnership with the hopes of engaging students’ interest in STEM and building stronger relationships with our local schools. NWESI doesn’t believe in “leftover busy-work internships;” we’ve found that investing in high-caliber students with real projects of value encourages them to explore and reach their potential!
Our student worker, Evelyn Velez, was with us September 2020May 2021. Although this program is usually in-person, we all adjusted to virtual teaching, feedback rounds, and communicating across schedules and technical problems for this year. The DLSNC team was fantastic about coordinating with us and making this process as smooth as possible. During the year, Evelyn assisted individuals from the administrative, business development, and commissioning teams. This was a great program that benefitted both parties: the student received real, career-work experience, and NWESI received valuable work from the student as well as an opportunity for our staff to work on their teaching skills.
Some of the tasks Evelyn worked on included:
Testing terminal units for the PDX Terminal Balance/Concourse E extension project for the Commissioning division.
CRM data input; social media auditing and school bond research; building a project profile and learning how to connect with target markets for the Business Development group.
