NWESI Shares Employer Perspective on the Corporate Work Study Program
— Marina Garcia, Marketing & Communications Specialist, NWESI (NorthWest Engineering Service, Inc.)
Given that our company is one that loves education, skill-building, and STEM subjects, NWESI president Tom Prevish was thrilled when Shiels Obletz Johnsen Managing Director/Partner Francesca Gambetti brought DLSNC’s Corporate Work Study Program to his attention. NWESI embarked on this new partnership with the hopes of engaging students’ interest in STEM and building stronger relationships with our local schools. NWESI doesn’t believe in “leftover busy-work internships;” we’ve found that investing in high-caliber students with real projects of value encourages them to explore and reach their potential!
Our student worker, Evelyn Velez, was with us September 2020—May 2021. Although this program is usually in-person, we all adjusted to virtual teaching, feedback rounds, and communicating across schedules and technical problems for this year. The DLSNC team was fantastic about coordinating with us and making this process as smooth as possible. During the year, Evelyn assisted individuals from the administrative, business development, and commissioning teams. This was a great program that benefitted both parties: the student received real, career-work experience, and NWESI received valuable work from the student as well as an opportunity for our staff to work on their teaching skills.
Some of the tasks Evelyn worked on included:
• Testing terminal units for the PDX Terminal Balance/Concourse E extension project for the Commissioning division.
• CRM data input; social media auditing and school bond research; building a project profile and learning how to connect with target markets for the Business Development group.
