Latinx Heritage Month spans from September 15 to October 15. Hispanic and Latino communities are celebrated beyond this month, but from September 15 to October 15, extra recognition is given to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more. Loyola Law School Latina Alum Spotlight, Mary V. Orozco '61

Mary Virginia Orozco '61 is a notable alumna of LLS. As we celebrate Latinx Heritage Month, we'd like to spotlight Mary's historical accomplishments. Mary was the first Latina to graduate from LLS and was the only woman in her graduating class. Upon passing the State Bar of California in 1962, Mary became the state's first Latina lawyer. Mary's various achievements demonstrate her commitment to administering justice and serving her community. Mary founded her own law office serving the Spanish-speaking community, and was a co-founder and officer of the Mexican American Bar Association, the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, and the Montebello East Los Angeles Bar Association. Student Spotlight: LLSA Co-Vice President, Jorge Villanueva

Jorge was presented with an opportunity to volunteer at the California Minority Counsel Program's Annual Business Conference (CMCP) on Sept. 11-13, 2024.

"I truly enjoyed my time volunteering for the California Minority Counsel Program (CMCP)’s Annual Business Conference this past week. I was able to witness firsthand the interview process Big Law attorneys go through with their in-house counterparts. As I plan to enter the same space, that experience was invaluable. I was also lucky to be able to attend the Men of Color Session, an open discussion about the issues men of color face in both our professional and personal lives as attorneys. I walked away with some great advice for my journey ahead to manage those competing interests in my life. As my time as a student at Loyola Law School comes to an end, I look forward to being able to contribute to CMCP’s mission as an attorney and bring more representation to the legal profession." - Jorge Villanueva '25

Hanson Bridgett’s 22^nd Annual Virtual 1L Interview Workshop will be hosted on Saturday, November 16^th from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM PT.

The Workshop is intended to give students a primer on what the world of legal interviewing is like, and some real-life opportunities to practice those interview skills.

A formal invite will be sent in the coming weeks with additional details and RSVP link to the affinity groups representing students who are historically underrepresented in the legal profession and/or who might be first-generation. While the Workshop can benefit all students, it is designed with the needs of these student groups in mind. We look forward to seeing your students at this workshop!

Voto Latino : Provides Latinx voters links to make sure you are registered to vote. Additionally, it provides brief summaries of prevalent issues and current policy. "Latino/a/x will be the largest racial/ethnic voting bloc for the first time in history". - LatinoCF
UnidosUS : In the last two decades, UnidosUS has registered one million Latinx voters through Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV).
Latino Community Foundation : The Latino Community Foundation works to mobilize the Latino vote through various efforts such as bringing together Latino nonprofits, advocates, and your to understand the importance of elections.
