Denison
Parent and Families
March 2020
A warm hello to our Denison Family!
Spring Break is approaching! Below is some information you might find helpful at this point in the semester.
COVID-19 Coronavirus update
Denison is closely monitoring the situation related to COVID-19 outbreaks in the U.S. and around the world. Our Pandemic Planning Team is creating response plans for different scenarios related to the virus and potential impacts to our campus community and operations. We have established a COVID-19 webpage to keep our community updated.
Spring break housing
  • Residence halls close at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, for Spring Break.
  • Residence halls re-open at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 22.
  • All students who plan to remain on campus must complete a Spring Break Housing Application via their MyHousing Portal.
  • The deadline for students to submit a spring break housing application is noon on Friday, March 6. Applications and requests received after the deadline may not be accepted.
  • Approved students may remain in their fall housing assignment for Spring Break.
Student Housing is unable to approve delayed departures or early arrivals back to campus. Break housing is available only for students who require housing for the entire break period. If travel plans require students to arrive in Central Ohio before 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, they need to find off-campus housing.
Students who have questions or concerns about break housing, including the application criteria for break housing, should contact the Housing Office at housing@denison.edu before the application deadline of noon on Friday, March 6.
Spring break transportation to and from the Columbus airport
During spring break, Denison partners with the SHARE airport shuttle service for a fee. Students are encouraged to sign up early to avoid additional fees. Your student can sign-up for a SHARE timeslot.
Please note that students must reserve their ride at least 48 hours in advance.
Spring break conversations
If your student is coming home for Spring Break, here are some things you might want to talk about.
  • You might want to talk to them about their midterm grades (which will post over the break on MyDenison for first-year and sophomore students). It’s best not to let specific grades drive the conversation, but instead to have a more general conversation about what’s going well.
  • Ask them how they are balancing academics and co-curricular commitments.
  • You might also want to talk about the best approaches to the second half of the semester when a natural tension develops between the increasing academic rigor/workload, the weather is getting nicer, and thoughts turning to summer plans, etc.
Here are some tips for those conversations. Make the Rest of the Semester Successful.

A reminder to families of seniors graduating in May
As you make plans for Commencement Weekend on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, we encourage you to consult our Commencement website for information about the weekend schedule and accommodations.
For friends and loved ones who cannot attend, we will live-stream the ceremony to allow your entire family to join in on all the excitement and watch your graduate cross the stage. An archived version of the ceremony also will be available to let you relive that special moment. Please refer to the Commencement website for more details as the date draws closer.
Some good information to remember: On April 1 and 2 at the Bookstore, graduating seniors can:
  • Pick up a cap and gown (free of charge) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Purchase a diploma frame (at 20 percent off those two days only)
  • Order commencement announcements
  • Order a class ring
One last thing: You can make a gift to the Denison Annual Fund before April 30 and have your name(s) included in the list of donors in the 2020 Commencement Program!
