Michelle Obama on Will & Grace, Hamilton Star Joins Tony Cárdenas, Kal Penn Says Bye to WH, and Tim Scott Talks Trump
Subscribe
The Spanish region of Catalonia has been rattled by two terror attacks and an explosion over the last few days. Three men have been arrested. A manhunt is underway for the fourth, and the NYT has the latest. Former President Barack Obama tweeted a message of support saying, “Michelle and I are thinking of the victims and their families in Barcelona. Americans will always stand with our Spanish friends. Un abrazo.” Donald Trump, on the other hand, took a different tone and pounced on the opportunity to call out “radical Islamic terrorism” and lashed out at the courts saying they should give “us” back “our” protective rights. Tough talk for these terrorists. But white supremacist terrorists get a breathing period and an eye wink before he addresses them. Speaking of, the mother of Heather Heyer -- the 32-year-old who was killed in the Charlottesville terrorist attack-- told ABC’s Good Morning America, “I won't talk to Trump after seeing him equate protesters like my daughter with neo-Nazis.” Guess it’s a good thing he never even bothered to make that phone call then. Just ten Republicans have spoken out against the president’s comments. That leaves a lot of other lawmakers whose silence could easily be mistaken for complicity. Where ya at GOP?? We hear we can expect the Republican party’s top officials and strategists to call for working with Trump on policy as soon as next week. Are we calling out racism or nah? Also, looks like the ACLU has had a change of heart as well. Kind of. According to the WSJ, they will no longer defend hate groups protesting with firearms. #FlashbackFriday: Remember on Monday when we thought the news from the weekend could not be topped? Members of White House Arts Commission Resign Today
The remaining members of a presidential arts and humanities panel are resigning today in yet another sign of growing national protest of Trump’s apologist remarks defending white supremacy on the violence in Charlottesville. Members of the commission include Obama-era holdovers actor Kal Penn, a longtime Barack Obama supporter and former WH staffer; director George C. Wolfe; musician and attorney Paula E. Boggs; author Jhumpa Lahiri; and others. Their decision comes after two WH corporate advisory boards also disbanded this week in protest of the president’s comments. Some members of the arts and humanities commission quit after Trump’s victory last fall, but the remaining commissioners agreed to continue in their roles until the president named successors. First Lady Melania Trump serves as honorary chairwoman of the arts commission. We assume she’s staying on. More here.
Michelle Obama on Will & Grace?
Michelle Obama
might be the latest big name added to the list of guest stars for the upcoming Will & Grace revival. In Touch Weekly is reporting that the former first lady will appear on an episode of the new season. “The details are still being worked out, but supposedly Michelle is up for anything, as long as it doesn’t cross the line too much,” someone described as an insider told the magazine. One person that will not be appearing in the revival is Shelley Morrison, who played Karen’s maid, Rosario, for the entire run of the original series. “Shelley has decided to retire. It was with a heavy heart that she gave us that information and that we received it, but it is the way that it goes. It is a choice that she has made,” said co-creator Max Mutchnick. More here.
Tim Scott Talks Trump
In an interview with VICE News on Thursday, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) condemned the neo-Nazis and white supremacists who marched in Charlottesville and questioned the president’s moral authority following the tragedy. “I’m not going to defend the indefensible…[Trump’s] comments on Monday were strong. His comments on Tuesday started erasing the comments that were strong. What we want to see from our president is clarity and moral authority. And that moral authority is compromised when Tuesday happened. There’s no question about that.” Scott added that the president hasn’t reached out to him to discuss Charlottesville. He also said to accomplish some of his priorities, like tax reform and affordable housing, he has no choice but to work with the president. “I’m gonna work with him wherever we are in agreement. I’m going to speak out against him when we are not in agreement. And that’s the bottom line,” the senator said. More here.

CHC Demands a Meeting Over HHS Failure to Reach Out to Latinos
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is demanding an urgent meeting with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) about the admin’s plan -- or lack thereof -- for outreach to Latinos for the upcoming open enrollment period. In a letter to HHS Secretary Tom Price, six Latino lawmakers --
Pete Aguilar (D-CA), Joaquín Castro (D-TX)Adriano Espaillat (D-NY)Rubén Gallego (D-NM)Michelle Luján Grisham (D-NM), and Raúl Ruiz (D-CA) -- requested the meeting, writing that they were alarmed by the Talking Points Memo report we told you about last Friday, which found that HHS had abandoned its collaboration with its group of Latino partners on promoting the Affordable Care Act. “The ACA remains the law of the land. As the agency tasked with launching a successful 2018 enrollment period, we should work together to ensure that HHS provides resources, information and properly coordinates with community stakeholders so we maximize access to health care for all eligible Hispanics and Americans. We urge HHS to prioritize Latino outreach and enrollment efforts in the 2018 enrollment period, and request an urgent meeting with you to discuss how the CHC can better work with your agency ... Preparation efforts and resources for Latino outreach are even more critical this upcoming open enrollment period, given the very limited timeframe people have to enroll.” More here from TPM.
Krishnamoorthi and Davis Question DHS Decision to Block Funding for Org Combatting White Supremacism
Illinois Democratic Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Danny Davis on Thursday sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) questioning its June 2017 decision to rescind funding for an initiative to counter right-wing extremism, including neo-Nazis, Klansmen, and other white supremacist groups. The letter cites DHS’ decision to rescind a $400,000 Countering Violent Extremism grant to Life After Hate, a Chicago-based nonprofit created by former far-right extremists that helps radicalized members of the extreme right transition out of those movements and back into society, despite a May 2017 report from the FBI and DHS stating that the white supremacist movement had carried out more attacks than any other domestic extremist groups over the past 16 years, and that they will likely continue to pose a lethal threat. “Most Americans knew there were right-wing extremists out there, but I doubt nearly as many people realized the scale of the threat posed by Neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and their supporters ... The Department’s decision to rescind funding dedicated to combatting (sic) right-wing extremism, just a month after its own report sounded the alarm on this threat, presents serious questions about the Trump administration’s approach to combatting white supremacy,” said Krishnamoorthi. Grace Meng Just Helped Female Federal Inmates. Period.
Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) gets a win. After urging the the Justice Department to make tampons, pads and liners available to federal female inmates, the agency has finally agreed to do so. Under the new policy, the Federal Bureau of Prisons will be required to provide these essential products to incarcerated women free of charge. Last year, Meng, joined by NYC Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, sent a letter to the DOJ calling for these types of feminine hygiene items to be made available to all female inmates. Lacy Clay Says State Rep Should Resign After Posting She Hopes Trump is Assassinated
Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D) wrote, “I hope Trump is assassinated!” during a Thursday morning Facebook exchange. She quickly deleted her post, but not quickly enough. By mid-afternoon, Congressman Lacy Clay (D-MO) weighed in saying, “Calling for the assassination of the President is a federal crime. ... (She is) an embarrassment to our state. She should resign immediately.” He was joined in his sentiments by Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) who said, "Missouri state senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal should resign," and many other elected officials across the state. In an interview, Chappelle-Nadal said, ““I didn’t mean what I put up. Absolutely not. I was very frustrated. Things have got to change. It was in response to the concerns that I am hearing from residents of St. Louis. I have deleted it, and it should have been deleted, but there is something way more important that we should be talking about.” She added later: “I am not resigning ... What I said was wrong, but I am not going to stop talking about what led to that, which is the frustration and anger that many people across America are feeling right now.” More here.
Charlottesville Vice Mayor Millennial Change Agent
At the center of Charlottesville news is the 30-year-old vice mayor of the city, Wes Bellamy. Reportedly, he spearheaded the removal of a statue of Virginian Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Root reports that Bellamy -- the youngest person to ever be elected to the Charlottesville City Council, and its only African American -- has been the subject of death threats and called “nigger” multiple times. Bellamy came to Charlottesville after graduating from South Carolina State more than nine years ago, and he spent many of his earlier years in Charlottesville as an organizer and educator. Bellamy, who has a doctorate in education administration and supervision, was elected to the five-person council in 2015, with a four-year term to run through 2020. He is a true millennial, firmly ensconced in social media, carving out new paths, and just might drop a little Kanye West in conversation. Check out the profile here.
Alabama AG Sues Birmingham Over Confederate Monument
The Alabama Attorney General’s Office has filed a lawsuit against the city of Birmingham and its mayor, William Bell (pictured), for allegedly violating state law by covering a Confederate monument currently on display in Linn Park. AG Steve Marshall said in a statement, “In accordance with the law, my office has determined that by affixing tarps and placing plywood around the Linn Park memorial such that it is hidden from view, the defendants have ‘altered’ or ‘otherwise disturbed’ the memorial in violation of the letter and spirit of the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act. The city of Birmingham does not have the right to violate the law and leaves my office with no choice but to file suit.” More here.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Joins Tony Cárdenas at California High School
Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda joined Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-CA) to speak with high school students in San Fernando Valley, CA on Thursday, a day after the hit Broadway musical opened at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre. About 1,000 high schoolers from across Cárdenas' 29th Congressional District were invited to participate. In a roughly 30-minute Q&A session at Panorama High School, Miranda flowed seamlessly between English and Spanish, speaking about his earliest memories with his abuelita and telling the young crowd, "Mi tiempo es tuya" -- "My time is yours." Cárdenas is the chair of Bold PAC, and Miranda's father, Luis Miranda, is a political consultant who recently joined the board of Latino Victory Fund. Lin-Manuel met with the congressman over coffee about the need to promote and empower Latino youth to engage them in the political process. "From the congressman's perspective, so many young Latinos just don't have faith in themselves and the confidence to get involved, so it was something that they're both very passionate about," said spokeswoman Francesca Amodeo. The Hamilton creator has been making a series of appearances as the musical makes its debut in LA -- he gave a mini-concert on the sidewalk outside the Pantages on Wednesday. More here.
Clarke Targets Confederacy on Military Bases
Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY)
announced on Thursday a plan to remove Confederate monuments from military bases, by introducing the Honoring Real Patriots Act of 2017, which would require the Department of Defense to change the name of any military installation or other property under its control currently named for individuals who fought against the United States during the Civil War or supported the Confederacy’s war efforts. “Monuments to the Confederacy and its leaders have always represented white supremacy and a continuing attempt to deny the basic human rights of African Americans. As recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia, have made perfectly clear, these monuments are nothing more than symbols of white supremacy and a pretext for the violent imposition of an evil ideology that should never have persisted into the Twenty-First Century,” Clarke said in a statement. AZ Congressmen to Trump: Don’t Pardon Joe Arpaio
Arizona Democratic Congressmen Raúl Grijalva, Rubén Gallego, and Tom O’Halleran on Thursday sent a letter to the president asking him to not pardon former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was recently found guilty of criminal contempt for disobeying an order to stop profiling undocumented immigrants. Arpaio is to be sentenced on October 5th and faces up to six months in prison. “We are gravely concerned by reports that you are considering a pardon for Joe Arpaio.  The former Maricopa County Sheriff was convicted of a serious crime and should pay any fine and serve any sentence in full.  We urge you in the strongest possible terms not to grant Mr. Arpaio relief from the penalties he deservedly faces for his illegal conduct and brazen abuse of the public trust,” the letter reads. Trump is planning a rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, and rumors are swirling that he will use the visit to pardon Arpaio. As The Beat DC reported yesterday, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton has asked Trump to postpone his visit. “If President Trump is coming to Phoenix to announce a pardon for Sheriff Joe Arpaio, then it will be clear that his true intent is to enflame emotions and further divide our nation.” Click here to view the letter.

Kevin Durant Will Skip WH Visit if Invited
On Thursday, Kevin Durant told ESPN that he would skip the White House visit if the NBA champion Golden State Warriors are invited, though the WH has not extended a formal invitation to the Warriors. "I don't agree with what he agrees with, so my voice is going to be heard by not doing that," said Durant. "That's just me personally, but if I know my guys well enough, they'll all agree with me ... I definitely want to be the voice of where I come from and people who have come from my neighborhood and deal with oppression. I'm representing a lot of people. As far as what's going on in our country, for one, as an athlete, you have to commend Colin KaepernickLeBron JamesCarmelo Anthony, CP3 [Chris Paul] [and] Dwyane Wade for starting that conversation last year. A lot [of] guys with platforms have drove the conversation in a good direction. And what's going on in Charlottesville, that was unfathomable." Kevin ... you the real MVP. Get more from ESPN here.
Carmen de Lavallade to Skip WH Reception Post-Kennedy Center Honors
On Thursday, Kennedy Center honoree, dancer and choreographer Carmen de Lavallade announced that she will skip the reception at the White House for Honors recipients. De Lavallade was a principal guest performer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and one of the first African Americans to dance for the Metropolitan Opera. “In light of the socially divisive and morally caustic narrative that our existing leadership is choosing to engage in, and in keeping with the principles that I and so many others have fought for, I will be declining the invitation to attend the reception at the White House,” she said in a statement on her website. Norman Lear, television producer and political activist, had previously announced that he plans to skip the reception. Cuban American entertainer Gloria Estefan has said if she attends, she wants to talk to Donald Trump about his stance on immigration. And, as The Beat DC told you earlier this week, singer Lionel Richie told NBC’s TODAY Show that he is undecided due to the political climate. More here.

Tech Companies Respond to White Supremacists
WSJ takes a look at how tech companies have been forced to address white supremacists. Following last weekend’s violence at a white supremacists’ rally in Charlottesville, VA, Alphabet, Google and GoDaddy Inc. stopped providing hosting support for the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi site that the companies said violated their terms of service. Airbnb Inc. banned participants in the rally from staying in rentals booked through its site. Uber Technologies Inc. blacklisted white supremacist James Allsup after Allsup and another passenger allegedly made racist remarks to their driver in DC on Friday night. Crowdfunding site GoFundMe removed campaigns to raise money to bail out the driver charged with speeding into a crowd of counterprotesters on Saturday, who killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer. Facebook Inc. said it removed the profile of Chris Cantwell, a white supremacist who was featured in a Vice News documentary on the Charlottesville protests. Twitter suspended the Daily Stormer’s account. Read more on their response here.
Espaillat and Evans Intro Legislation Prohibiting Federal Funds from Going Toward Confederate Symbols
On Thursday, Congressmen Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) and Dwight Evans (D-PA) introduced the No Federal Funding for Confederate Symbols Act, which would prohibit Federal funds from being used to create, maintain, or display, as applicable, any Confederate symbol on federal public land, including any highway, park, subway, federal building, military base, street, or other federal property. There are at least 1,503 remaining symbols of the Confederacy in public spaces, including 109 public schools named after prominent Confederates, many with large African American student populations; more than 700 Confederate monuments and statues on public property throughout the country, the vast majority in the South. Fox News Host Eboni K. Williams Receives Death Threats After Segment Criticizing Trump
Eboni K. Williams, the co-host of The Fox News Specialists, told Variety that she received hundreds of emails, including death threats, after she aired her grievances with Donald Trump post-Charlottesville. During her “Eboni’s Docket” segment, she called out Trump for not originally condemning white nationalists. “I should meet my maker soon, I shouldn’t be allowed to walk the streets of New York,” she cited as some examples of the type of comments she received. “They heard that I live in Harlem — Harlem needs to watch out.” She requested additional security from Fox News and now receives an escort to and from the building.
