With the Senate pushing the vote on healthcare to after recess, it appears all that winning is as real as the Time Magazine cover that was hanging in some of Donald Trump’s clubhouses. That’s right. The president, who co-opted the term “fake news,” is spreading some fake news himself. Speaking of, the White House is giving yet another off-camera briefing today at 1:30P.  Sean Spicer is back at bat after a Playboy reporter, Brian J. Karem (the real MVP), called out Sarah Huckabee Sanders yesterday for consistently targeting the media. Worth a watch! Wait...Playboy has a WH reporter?? In other news, hackers who took control of computers and demanded a ransom on Tuesday employed the same program from the National Security Agency that was used in a similar assault in May. The NYT reports what is known so far. Tomorrow is the last day Congress is in session, and then they’re out for the July 4th recess. It’s safe to say we know what Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will be doing over recess. Will he be able to sway GOP members even after the White House is attacking their own? According to reports, members are still fuming after the pro-Trump super PAC put Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) in its crosshairs. Try honey instead of vinegar, gentlemen. Or maybe just a bill that doesn’t prioritize the wealthiest among us, cut Medicaid by billions, and leaves 22 million without coverage. Here’s what we’ve got today:
  • Will the Pentagon deport immigrants it recruited? Not if Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) can help it.
  • The Obamas on vacay. Can they live?
  • South Carolinians want to marry Senators Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham. See why.
  • Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) is in recovery.
  • Ammar Campa-Najjar's star is rising.

  • Planned Parenthood says no wonder Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) can't get healthcare bill passed.

  • Today at 5P, the Center for American Progress is hosting a “hand chain” around the Capitol to show its support for the 2010 healthcare law.
  • Preet Bharara has an announcement. Stay tuned ...

Senators Scott and Graham Headed to the Altar?
They’ll have to if Obamacare is repealed, according to a group of South Carolina residents who posted a serious-not-serious video saying they would have to marry their Palmetto State senators -- Republicans Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott -- in order to get access to healthcare. The video (click the photo to watch it) is a parody of singer Bruno Mars’ 2010 song, “Marry You” and features men and women -- some wearing wedding garb and holding bouquets -- singing to photos of Graham and Scott, and saying, “No we aren’t in love, just want your healthcare plan. I’m that scared Lindsey, I think I got to marry you.” These South Carolinians did get a reprieve yesterday from walking down the aisle, as the Senate GOP leadership decided to postpone the healthcare vote until after the July 4th recess. More here.

Did You Know It Was Against the Law for Former Presidents to Vacation?
That's what Fox News would have you believe. The network is coming after a private citizen and his family for the type of vacations they’re taking. Yep, they have taken to criticizing former President Barack Obama’s “luxury” family vacation to Bali. Fox bashed the Obama family’s vacations since leaving office, including trips to the Four Seasons in Bali and an exclusive country club in Oahu, Hawaii. In their article, Fox quoted Democratic strategist and former Jimmy Carter advisor Pat Caddell, who said “these trips are like the lifestyles of the rich and famous,” as well as so-called “left-wing activists” who said they were troubled by Obama’s apparent efforts to distance himself from the grassroots of the Democratic party (We fail to see the correlation but will note that Fox is using unnamed sources). Fox says nothing about Trump’s expensive golfing trips to his own Mar-a-Lago, FL and Bedminster, NJ estates on eight of the 23 weekends he has been in office -- which have been found to cost taxpayers millions -- or that the current First Lady lived in a golden, opulent penthouse in Manhattan for the first five months of her husband’s presidency at substantial taxpayer expense. More here.
It’s because of Planned Parenthood supporters’ hard work – organizing in communities, calling Senators, and rallying in the streets – that Senator McConnell delayed the vote on Trumpcare. It’s no wonder they are struggling to get the votes: this is the worst bill for women’s health in a generation, and would devastate millions of people. But make no mistake: this fight is far from over. Hear from people who would be hurt most.
Hirono Undergoes Successful Surgery
Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) successfully underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a rib lesion, the latest operation in her ongoing battle with stage four kidney cancer. Hirono first announced her cancer diagnosis in May. She has already undergone a procedure to have one of her kidneys removed. Senator Hirono says her doctors in DC gave her a favorable prognosis, and she's still vowing to run for re-election. More here.
Ro Khanna Has Concerns About Amazon-Whole Foods Deal
Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA), who represents a big chunk of Silicon Valley, said that the Amazon-Whole Foods deal shows why the government should think differently about mergers. “This as a case study for how we think about antitrust policy,” he said. Khanna said that recent antitrust cases have turned on the question of whether a merger would, in point of fact, immediately raise prices for consumers. He calls for a “reorientation” of antitrust decision making to look at a much broader set of concerns, including the effect that a merger could have on jobs, wages, innovation, and small businesses. The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal reports that whether he can get traction for this idea might be a bellwether for how well the populist wave in U.S. politics can translate into policy reprioritization. More here.
Grace Napolitano Home with Husband as He Goes Through Chemo
Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (D-CA)
will miss House votes while her husband, Frank Napolitano, undergoes chemotherapy and radiation to treat esophageal cancer, her spokesman said. Napolitano has missed the last two weeks of House votes, though she's working some from the district and is expected to remain in California for several more weeks to care for her husband during the treatment. Her spokesperson did not know for sure how long Napolitano would be gone, but said it is possible she might make it back for some votes during the seven-week-long treatment. Napolitano says, however, that she will try to return if the House votes again on the GOP healthcare bill. "I intend to be back at work soon," she said. More here.

Pentagon Promised Citizenship to Immigrants Who Served and Now It Might Help Deport Them
The Defense Department is considering a plan to cancel enlistment contracts for 1,000 foreign-born recruits without legal immigration status, knowingly exposing them to deportation, an agency memo shows. The undated action memo, prepared for Defense Secretary Jim Mattise by personnel and intelligence officials at the Pentagon and obtained by the WaPo, describes potential security threats of immigrants recruited in a program designed to award fast-tracked citizenship in exchange for urgently needed medical and language skills. Additionally, 4,100 troops -- most of whom are naturalized citizens -- may face “enhanced screening,” though the Pentagon voiced concern on how to navigate “significant legal constraints” of “continuous monitoring” of citizens without cause, according to the memo. Late yesterday, Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) sent a letter to the president requesting that no foreign-born person recruited into the armed forces be deported as the result of a reported policy change recommendation within the Department of Defense. See the letter.
Federal Judge Blocks U.S. Deportation Of Iraqis Nationwide
Late Monday, a district court judge in Michigan blocked Immigration and Customs Enforcement from deporting any Iraqi national for at least two weeks, expanding an order that initially applied only to immigrants in the Detroit area. U.S. District Court Judge Mark Goldsmith ruled that more than 1,400 Iraqis at risk of being deported from the U.S. could face "grave consequences" if they're forced to return to their native country -- and that the potential for irreparable harm outweighs the government's interest in their immediate removal. Goldsmith, who was named to the bench by President Obama in 2010, added, "the public interest is served by assuring that habeas rights are not lost before this Court can assess whether it has jurisdiction in this case." Michigan has the largest number of Iraqi-born residents in the country. More here.
FCC Chair Says Agency Website Was Hacked
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai told senators that a recent incident where the agency’s Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS) crashed -- shortly after HBO comedian John Oliver urged viewers to flood the agency with pro-net neutrality comments -- was actually caused by hackers. Many had assumed that the system had bogged down to a crawl because of a large number of inquiries, but Pai said it was an attack designed to take down a site by flooding it with fake traffic.“I agree that this disruption to (the ECFS) by outside parties was a very serious matter,” Pai wrote in a letter to legislators dated June 15th. “The Commission's (Chief Information Officer) has informed me that the FCC's response to the events sufficiently addressed the disruption, and that ECFS is continuing to collect all filed comments.” Legislators weren't buying it and told Pai that, clearly, the agency wasn’t ready to deal with an attack like this and that it should consider other methods for the public to submit comments. More here.

Super PAC Targets Marilyn Mosby
Opponents of Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby have formed a super PAC called the Bmore Safe Now PAC. They posted an 18-second attack ad online on its website last week titled, "Change starts at the top" that calls attention to the city's rising homicide rate since Mosby took office. A spokesman for Bmore Safe Now, defense attorney Joshua Insley, said the group represents a wide array of interests with a shared goal of opposing Mosby. They include defense attorneys, former prosecutors, law enforcement, and community members, he said. More here.

Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara announced that he is joining his younger brother’s media company, Some Spider Studios. Bharara will become an Executive Vice President at Some Spider, which Vinit Bharara started in 2014. He will also host a podcast called “Stay Tuned With Preet.” According to the NYT, the phrase “Stay Tuned” will sound familiar to anyone who attended his news conferences. The podcast, which is scheduled to begin airing in the coming months, will explore justice and fairness issues and provide in-depth analysis on legal cases. Mr. Bharara also expects to write articles for Some Spider’s news and entertainment website, Cafe, and he and brother Vinit plan to introduce a conference, Cafe Con, next year. NALEO Re-Elects President & Welcomes New Board
NALEO re-elected Dallas County Treasurer Pauline Medrano (pictured) to an additional one-year term as NALEO president. New officers and seven new board members were also elected during NALEO’s board of directors meeting on June 25th following the 34th annual conference in Dallas. Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea, California State Assemblyman Dante Acosta, Massachusetts State Representative Jeffrey Sánchez, Executive Director of Kansas Hispanic & Latino American Affairs Commission Adrienne Vallejo-Foster, Harris County Sheriff (TX) Ed González, Governing Board Member of Southwestern Community College District (CA) Nora Vargas, and Canutillo Independent School District (TX) School Board Trustee Armando Rodríguez were unanimously elected to serve an initial three-year term as board members.
Campa-Najjar’s Star is Rising
The NYT has a profile on Ammar Campa-Najjar, 28, one of five Democrats vying for a congressional House seat in California’s 50th district. He also is of Palestinian and Mexican descent. In the interview, he shared his experiences campaigning as an Arab-Latino and his plans to bring SpaceX to San Diego. “We’ve reached out to Elon Musk’s company to make solar farming available to constituents. I also want to bring the SpaceX program to the district. Elon Musk is well on his way to privatizing space travel, and if we could tap into that by creating launch sites here, that would help create jobs,” Campa-Najjar said. There was More to the Tense Richmond-King Exchange Than Meets the Eye
Last week, The Beat reported about the exchange between Congressmen Cedric Richmond (D-LA) and Steve King (R-IA) where King went after New Orleans’ crime rates as compared to Guatemala and El Salvador. Richmond stopped him in his tracks to stand up for his constituents. However, we received a few comments highlighting another angle: the continued perpetuation of Latinos as criminals. Once such perspective came from the Hispanic Lobbyists Association’s Zuraya Tapia-Hadley, also a Principal at The Raben Group, who wrote a piece highlighting the issue. “Ironically, Richmond complained, “It’s not appropriate. It’s insensitive. And it’s nothing more than traditional white privilege of ‘let me criticize a minority city.’ ... Well, Rep. Richmond, you followed him by quite unfairly criticizing a whole minority group,” she writes in a piece for Medium. The whole article is an eye-opening take highlighting how the exchange epitomizes everything that's wrong with Congress today. Read it here.
Senators Cross Party Lines to Safeguard Tribal Objects
Last week, Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) reintroduced the bipartisan Safeguard Tribal Objects of Patrimony (STOP) Act, a bill to prohibit the exporting of sacred Native American items and increase penalties for stealing and illegally trafficking tribal cultural patrimony. Senators Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Tom Udall (D-NM), John McCain (R-AZ), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Steve Daines (R-MT), Jon Tester (D-MT), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) are co-sponsors of the bill. More here.
Director of Office of Indian Energy Deletes Offensive Twitter Account
Remember the Trump administration's Director of the Office of Indian Energy at the Department of Energy who tweeted that former President Barack Obama was a "Kenyan creampuff" and described the internment of Japanese Americans as "necessary"? Well after the WaPo asked him about it, William C. Bradford got off Twitter completely. What do you know? #DeleteYourAccount actually worked for once. He apologized after admitting he shared these posts and other messages about women and minorities under the handle "Brute_Bradford." “As a minority and member of the Jewish faith, I sincerely apologize for my disrespectful and offensive comments,” Bradford said (as if being a minority is any type of excuse). Bradford, a supporter of Trump, claims to be a citizen of the Chiricahua Apache Nation and said he most recently served as its attorney general. More here.

Morehouse Elects Interim President
The Morehouse College Board of Trustees on Monday unanimously picked Harold Martin, Jr. as the interim president, handling the day-to-day functions of the college until a permanent president has been appointed. His predecessor, William J. “Bill” Taggart, died unexpectedly earlier this month, leaving a gap in leadership at Morehouse. “While these circumstances are certainly unprecedented, I am honored to step into the role of Interim President of Morehouse College,” Martin said. He has an M.B.A from Harvard Business School and a J.D. from Yale Law School, and he graduated from Morehouse Summa Cum Laude in 2002 as the class valedictorian, with a B.A. in Business Administration as well as membership in the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Georgetown Falls Short on Their Version of Reparations
After discovering that Georgetown University sold slaves, the school, along with a formal apology, decided to rededicate the buildings that were previously named after the Jesuits involved in the sales to honor the enslaved men and women. The school also announced that they would offer preferential status to the descendants of the 272 slaves. One such student, a Louisiana State University alumna, applied for Georgetown’s graduate journalism program in April and was accepted. Elizabeth Thomas said that she was under the impression that Georgetown would be providing at least some financial assistance to the descendants. But after talks with financial aid advisors, she learned that the school is only offering her loans. The average cost for graduate candidates in Georgetown’s School of Continuing Studies is $47,360 per academic year. Elizabeth plans on finishing her degree within three semesters. More here.
Arizona’s Mexican American Studies Ban Goes To Trial
Over the course of a two-week bench trial, the state of Arizona hopes to convince U.S. District Judge A. Wallace Tashima that a 2010 law passed by Arizona Republicans was necessary to stop ethnic studies classes because they politicized students and made them resent white people. You read that right -- that’s the reason they banned a Mexican American studies program in public schools credited with boosting Latino student achievement. The Arizona trial strikes at the issue of how to teach students about race and social injustice in public schools that often exemplify the country’s inequality. “Many of my students would say it was the first time they saw themselves in the material,” said Curtis Acosta, one of the program’s founders and the first witness to testify. “For many of them, it was the first time they read a book at all.” More here.

Newly Elected Mayor Aims to Make Jackson, MS Most Radical City
Chokwe Lumumba will be sworn is as the next Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. He has vowed to make Jackson the "most radical city on the planet." He is the son of the city’s former mayor, the late Chokwe Lumumba, who was once dubbed "America’s most revolutionary mayor." The 34-year-old member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity supports economic democracy and has proposed a civic incubator fund to support cooperative, member-owned businesses in Jackson. Shortly after his election, Lumumba was a featured speaker, just a few weeks ago, at the People’s Summit in Chicago. “We have two choices. We have a choice of economics by the people and for the people or economics by a few people for themselves. And so, we’re demanding, right now, right now, that we begin to rescue ourselves ... We have nothing to lose but our chains,” he said. More here.
FL Gubernatorial Candidate Andrew Gillum Calls for Constitutional Amendment on Healthcare
Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum announced Tuesday his support for a proposed constitutional amendment that would declare affordable healthcare is a fundamental right of all Floridians and directs the Florida legislature to make healthcare a priority when building its budget. “When healthcare is under attack in Washington, we're going to lean into the challenge of healthcare in the Sunshine State and live our values," the FAMU graduate said. Gillum said he would work with the Florida legislature to pass a law requiring companies to issue health insurance policies to individuals and prevent insurance companies from limiting coverage for pre-existing conditions. Last week, Gillum announced support of a state law to guarantee continued no-cost access to contraception. More here.

Latino Rebels Call Out Boston Globe
The leading Latino activist website Latino Rebels has slammed the Boston Globe and its columnist Kevin Cullen for alleged discrimination against Latino undocumented immigrants compared to how the paper writes about undocumented Irish immigrants. The group, founded by activist Julio Ricardo Varela, says “This is not the first time we have raised the issue of how the so-called “liberal” Boston Globe has had this ongoing problem of propping up and decriminalizing Irish immigrants over Latin American ones. The Latino Rebels has now taken the Boston Globe to task in their article, The Sad (and Dangerous) Case of Boston Globe’s ‘Irish Immigrant Privilege.’ Read it here.
Norton Kicks Off Music on the Mall
Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced Monday that the annual Music on the Mall series will begin Thursday. The concerts in the series feature a variety of local D.C. artists and takes place every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 1P on the Mall in the area across from the National Air and Space Museum (Jefferson Drive Southwest between Fourth and Seventh streets). Oxford Just Got Woke
The term "woke" has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary. The definition of the word, previously used to mean "awake," has adopted an expanded definition meaning "alert to injustice in society, especially racism." After monitoring the usage of the word and conducting a careful study of its etymology, the Oxford English Dictionary announced the change in June as part of its quarterly update. Katherine Martin, head of Oxford's U.S. Dictionaries, traced the use of the word "woke" in its current, informal context back to the 1960s. While the term may very well have been born out of that politically awakened decade, Black millennials are likely to credit Erykah Badu for popularizing the word in her 2008 song Master Teacher, where the phrase "stay woke" was used to define an ideal, if unrealistic, state of racial harmony that is far from reality.
