Keep Applying, Companies ARE Hiring
A Message from the CALS Career Center
Students have been asking, “Are companies still hiring? Should I still apply for jobs and internships? Is there any possibility of finding a job?” The answer is definitively - keep applying, companies ARE hiring.
The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting businesses and higher education institutions around the globe and everyone is working to determine paths forward. Forward is the progress we need to be making during this time and this period is offering us all time to pivot and develop transferable skills. The Career Center staff is here to help you figure out your path and provide you guidance and insight to what lies ahead.
Who’s Hiring?
The Career Center has been monitoring the job market closely and we are happy to share that there are opportunities. However, this is the time to be strategic and consider opportunities in a variety of areas - spread the search as widely as possible. Being agile and entrepreneurial during this complex time will be your biggest advantage in finding employment. Employers are looking for those individuals who can adapt to new and challenging situations like the one we currently face.
- AgCareers.com surveyed agriculture employees and candidates, with nearly 600 responses. It was reassuring that 81% of agricultural employers are continuing recruitment and hiring despite the pandemic. The majority of employers are keeping their recruitment activities the same as they planned.
- Candor.co offers an actively updated list of companies and the current status regarding hiring.
- LinkedIn has curated a list of companies that are actively hiring. They have also started a #GetHired initiative to allow LinkedIn users to share who is currently hiring. LinkedIn is an incredibly valuable source at this time, build your profile and start connecting.
- It’s important for all students to continue utilizing Handshake as much as possible. Handshake is being incredibly responsive to employers, institutions, and students and implementing a variety of tools to strengthen connections and make searches more effective.
What’s next?
This is a time to be proactive and to strengthen and utilize your digital resources. Focus on what you have accomplished in the classroom, clubs, internships, research experiences, and student positions. During your academic journey you have learned to be agile, strategic, and creative entrepreneurial thinkers. Now is the time to use these skills to become competitive in the rapidly changing job market.
If you need assistance building your online profile, refining your resume, or just discussing opportunities make an appointment with the Career Center in Handshake or utilize daily drop-in hours (now virtual).
