Looking for a getaway where you can just…disappear for a while? You’re not the only one. “Call it slow, unplugged, or quiet travel; more vacationers are seeking time away from the noise of daily life,” writes G&G contributor Crai Bower. Below, discover seven destinations that inspire a sense of calm, including an island spa in the Florida Keys, a cozy Texas cave (it’s plusher than it sounds), a Chesapeake Bay lighthouse, and more Southern escapes.

Colorado: With our recent whisper of fall weather down here in Charleston, I’m reminiscing on the humidity-free mornings of colorful Colorado, where my dad lives.

A warm welcome: Whenever I visit, it is sacred tradition to kick off the trip at Garden of the Gods Park in Colorado Springs. As the name suggests, the views are incredible, boasting thick sheets of striking red rock, free for the public to enjoy. While you’re over on that side of town, take a (winding and somewhat nerve-racking) drive up to Pikes Peak, one of Colorado’s Fourteeners. Or simply put, a really, really tall mountain.
-
Sweet Salida: On arguably the most prime corner of real estate in Salida, Ruby Blues sells vintage band T-shirts, well-loved leather, and all the upcycled hiking gear you could imagine. There’s also an impressive street of artistic storefronts (like Carl Bork’s studio) and eateries (like Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop) right along the Arkansas River.
-
Standout stay: With its century-old elevator that still brings guests to their floor and historical artifacts hidden on the walls, Hotel Boulderado is a must-see when in Boulder. Built in 1908, it’s a great spot to linger when not traipsing around Pearl Street Mall or adventuring through Rocky Mountain National Park. Pro tip: Head down to the Corner Bar on the first floor of the hotel to enjoy the evening views at sunset, paired with a slice of their Key lime pie.
