Advance Notice to People Leaders:
This afternoon, we will share the following updates with Wave 1 employees. As both a supervisor and employee, you are receiving the message early. Please read the message in its entirety to help you prepare for next steps.
View last week’s update on the notification process here. Supervisor-led dialogue is the most effective way to communicate the personal impacts of organizational change. To support supervisors in engaging their employees around this change, we developed a “Meeting-in-a-Box” tool. A “Meeting-in-a-Box” includes discussion starters, logistics, talking points and useful resources for leaders to use in 1:1 meetings with employees. The tool allows supervisors to engage their employees in a structured, forward-focused conversation around the change. Use this tool as you hold 1:1 meetings with your employees over the next few weeks.

Dear Colleagues,
Georgia Tech is one of the nation’s top public research universities with nearly 50,000 students and a mission to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. For more than 139 years, the people of Georgia Tech have dared to imagine and then create solutions for a better future. The Institute’s ambitious strategic plan requires us to tap into the innovative, solution-oriented spirit that has defined our Georgia Tech since 1885.
Georgia Tech’s current career system no longer meets our needs. That is why we are building a comprehensive career system that redefines how we approach, manage, and navigate professional careers at Tech. Once the full career system is implemented, employees will have a clear framework to plan, and advance their careers at the Institute. This is a multi-year journey, and our first milestone is Wave 1 of the Job Families implementation.

What's Happening This Week
|
- Wave 1 employees will receive an email from Georgia Tech Human Resources notifying them that (a) their role is moving into an equivalent role in the new job family or (b) their role requires further review and will not change at this time.
-
Once notifications are sent, supervisors can begin to meet with their direct reports to discuss your individual impact. Due to the winter holidays with many people taking time away, we expect these conversations to take place early in the new year.
- The position crosswalk and job profiles will be available on the job family website later today, Wednesday, Dec. 18.
- The crosswalk “walks” current JCCS position titles to an equivalent position title in the new job family. A job profile captures the generic job responsibilities of the role.
- Individual employee information will not appear in the crosswalk.
-
Georgia Tech uses as many generic job titles as possible to pay equitably and comparably within the Institute and against external markets. In certain circumstances, a more specific title serves the unit’s operational or recruiting interests. When this occurs, a working title may be used. Updated working title guidelines are now available.
- Please note that as GTHR conducts final audits of the updated job families through January the position crosswalks and job profiles will be updated. We do not expect these updates to be substantial.

Introducing Job Profiles & Career Levels
|
To make Georgia Tech’s career system more agile and consistent, we are introducing the use of job profiles.
|
- Currently, the Institute only uses job descriptions which detail specific job duties and knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs). This will change in the updated career system. In the updated system, the foundation of the job description will be the job profile.
- A job profile outlines the generic job duties, degree of responsibility, and decision-making authority of the job.
- During the implementation period, you will use two tools to view your role’s generic job duties, degree of responsibility, and decision-making authority of the job.
-
Job Profile – provides the general day-to-day job duties unique to the job.
-
Career Level Matrix – provides detailed definitions for each career level within our five new career categories – Support, Professional, Manager, Director, and Executive. The career level matrix is available on the Job Families & Career Paths website.
-
As you view the updated information, remember that detailed tasks, expectations, and goals for the role are set at the manager level and contribute to the organization’s strategic goals.
|
As you reflect on 2024 and prepare for 2025, we encourage you to reflect on what excites you about the work you do and what brings you satisfaction. We are excited about the opportunities our new, integrated career system will create and are grateful for being a part of this journey. I will send my next update to employees during the week of January 6. I hope you have a happy, healthy, and restorative holiday season.
Sincerely,
Cedric Franklin, EdD
