Danny Glover Joins Airbnb, Ben Carson Has Weird Drama at HUD, Marco Rubio Joins VP, and Carlos Curbelo Pushes Trump Tax Policy
Subscribe
Dear Mr. President -- we can hear you. You know that, right? Playing his supporters for fools at a campaign style rally last night in Phoenix, 45’s revisionist history was peppered with indirect attacks towards AZ GOP Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain, direct attacks on the media saying they don’t love America and even prompting the crowd to shout “CNN sucks,” an implied pardon for former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and misrepresenting his own post-Charlottesville remarks by omitting portions of his comments that called white nationalists fine people and said there was violence on “many sides.” But will they believe Trump? Or their own lying eyes? Outside, the police used tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters. Oh! And the wall is back. He threatened to shutdown the government if the “obstructionist Democrats” don’t clear the path for it to be built. Of course, only Congress can shut down the government. And, of course, the GOP has the majority in both chambers. But who has time for facts when you’re talking to sycophants. This. Is. Not. Normal. This president appears to be beefing with everyone. The NYT reports that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is no longer on speaking terms with the president and has privately cast doubt about his ability to lead. And former BFF Steve Bannon has now declared war with Trump. A British prankster impersonating Bannon fooled at least two Breitbart editors. One exchange suggested they will have surrogates do the dirty work, as they describe Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump as evil. It has been a crazy week and we’re only halfway through! First, we lost a dragon (if you haven’t watched GOT by now, it’s your own fault. Spoilers are inevitable at this point), then we had an eclipse, and last night, we were surprised at just how not surprised we are at this president’s words. We’re kicking off the midweek read with this:
  • Danny Glover joins Airbnb.
  • Not wanting to eclipse Harvard move-in day, Obamas move Malia under the moon.
  • Congresswoman Alma Adams (D-NC) will host her own HBCU event to counter the WH.
  • WH reportedly looking at DREAMers as a bargaining chip.
  • It took Charlottesville for Black Trump loyalists (pardon the oxymoron) to be conflicted?
  • Los Angeles sues DOJ over sanctuary city policy.
  • Randall Woodfin advances to Birmingham mayoral runoff.
  • Robin Roberts brings in the green.
  • In other green news, MD weed industry still totally white.
  • Congressman Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) stumps for Trump’s tax reform.
  • AZ ban on Mexican American studies program struck down.
  • WTH is going on at HUD?!
  • Robert Lee gets booted from UVA home opener. Robert Lee the football commentator.
  • Kickstarter has a new Director of Engineering.
  • Hispanic Heritage Foundation will honor The Latin Recording Academy.
  • Rev. Jesse Jackson tells Katrina Pierson to check his good history.
  • Pokanoket Nation encamps on an Ivy League school, claiming land was stolen.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month events are starting to roll in! Check them out in FOMO.

Danny Glover Joins Airbnb
Danny Glover is joining the Airbnb team as an Advisor for their ongoing efforts to engage communities of color. His specific focus will be ensuring that communities are taking advantage of the economic opportunity to host on the Airbnb platform. “I know Airbnb has had its own share of challenges in this arena—but working with them, I’ve seen first-hand how committed they are to getting it right,” the actor said in a post. He says that over the past several months, he has had the opportunity to meet numerous African American and Latino Airbnb hosts who have impacted him. Janaye Ingram, Airbnb's Director of Partnerships, says, “Progressives throughout America and the world know Mr. Glover as a steadfast advocate for social justice. For more than five decades, Mr. Glover has fought for economic empowerment in communities of color. We’re honored to be working with him to ensure that all guests feel at home on Airbnb—no matter who they are, what they look like, or where they’re from.” Recently, Ingram helped spearhead a partnership with NAACP as well. More here from Danny Glover.

Rubio and Díaz-Balart Join Pence Today to Meet with FL Venezuelan Community
Today, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL) will join VP Mike Pence in Doral, FL to participate in a briefing at the U.S. Southern Command and will then participate in a listening session with South Florida activists, leaders, and officials about the continuing devastation and unrest in Venezuela. Doral is home to the largest Venezuelan immigrant community in the U.S. Governor Rick Scott will join them as well. Earlier this month, Donald Trump said he’s considering military intervention. Pence is expected to say that the WH remains committed to punishing President Nicolás Maduro’s government for systematically dismantling the South American country’s democracy. But exactly what the punishment from the U.S. might entail remains unclear, a month after Trump promised “strong and swift economic actions.” More here.
WH Reportedly Looking at DREAMers as Bargaining Chip
Several top WH officials want Trump to strike a deal with Congress that offers DREAMers -- the nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants currently protected from deportation under the DACA program -- protection in exchange for legislation that would pay for a border wall, fund more detention centers, and lower legal immigration numbers, among other things, reports McClatchy. WH aides pushing for this approach include Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and John Kelly. McClatchy also says that VP Pence and former WH Chief of Staff Reince Priebus support the approach, though others, including AG Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, stand against providing any relief to DREAMers. Supporters of the DACA program were quick to denounce this approach. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus said, “Trump's White House wants to hold DACA recipients hostage in order to force an egregious anti-immigrant agenda,” and Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) tweeted, “Rumors of Trump deal to sell DREAMers & #DACA for more deportations & border wall... NO DEAL.” More here.

Alma Adams Hosts Counter Event During WH HBCU Conference
Last week, HBCU Caucus Co-Chair Congresswoman Alma Adams (D-NC) called on the White House to postpone the annual HBCU conference which takes place September 17th-19th in DC. But, despite HBCU presidents pulling out to protest Donald Trump’s Charlottesville remarks, the WH has decided to move ahead with the conference anyway. On Tuesday, Adams criticized the decision, saying the administration has done nothing to help HBCUs since the Oval Office photo-op in February. "It would be more productive to hear from the President directly or from his Secretary of Education about what progress they are making on the HBCUs' request before asking Presidents to come back to Washington for another photo-op,” the congresswoman said in a statement. The congresswoman says she will instead host her own HBCU event during the CBC Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference. “Despite the ongoing drama and unnecessary distractions of the President's own making, we plan to move forward with opportunities for HBCU leaders to engage in substantive dialogues that put our schools and students first." Read her original statement requesting the conference be postponed here.
Curbelo Criticizes Trump While Pushing His Tax Reform Agenda
Even as Congressman Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) continues to criticize Donald Trump, he is still going to bat for one of the president’s top causes: tax reform. Curbelo was featured with other Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee calling for tax reform, at an event at the Reagan Ranch in California last Wednesday. “It’s our turn to renew the confidence of the American worker, to show American families that they can succeed here and that this is the greatest place in the world to get a job, to start a company, to invent a new product. That is what tax reform is all about,” Curbelo said. In an appearance on CNN last week, he fell short of calling Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka racists. "I'm not saying these people are racists, I'm not saying that they want to advance a racist agenda, but it is pretty clear that they believe that these groups should be accommodated," Curbelo said. Villaraigosa Thinks Kamala Harris is Running for President
Former LA Mayor and 2018 California gubernatorial candidate Antonio Villaraigosa is another who believes that Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) will be running for president in the near future. Appearing on MSNBC Sunday morning, Villaraigosa was asked by host Hugh Hewitt whether or not Harris "has a stake" in the California governor's race in 2018. Villaraigosa responded, "Well, not yet. I hope she will support my candidacy, but as you say, she is a great candidate. She's going to be knocking on doors in Iowa, I expect.” See video here.

WTH is Going on at HUD?
Seriously, what is going on at HUD?? A report filed by New York Magazine and ProPublica says that HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson has a constant companion at his job -- his wife Candy. According to reports, the energetic former real-estate agent, who is an accomplished violinist and has co-authored four books with her husband, has been spending far more time inside the department’s headquarters in DC than anyone could recall a secretary’s spouse doing in the past. This, the report says, is only one of many oddities that HUD employees were encountering in the Trump era. She’d even taken the mic before Carson made his introductory speech to the department. “We’re really excited about working with — ” She broke off then, as if detecting the puzzlement of the audience. “Well, he’s really.” And this isn’t even the weirdest part. The report goes on to detail infighting between former staffer Shermichael Singleton and Maren Kasper, political jobs that remain vacant, and hiring staff with no housing experience. More on that in the next story. This entire report is worth a read from beginning to end. Not only is it a page-turner, but it’s a head scratcher that will leave you asking yourself, “what the hell is going on at HUD?” And for the hundreds of thousands of people who are impacted by policy coming from this agency, answers can’t come soon enough. HUD’s Lynne Patton’s Résumé
Trump tapped his family event planner, Lynne Patton, to oversee one of the largest regions under HUD. As The Beat DC reported before, she has no experience in housing. The WaPo got a hold of her one-page résumé that Patton had to submit as part of the transition. According to the Post, she began working for Eric Trump in 2009 as the VP of his foundation and as his primary aide. She oversaw all aspects of his business, charity, and personal obligations. That included his home, as well as coordinating events. Then she was promoted in 2012 to be the Trump family’s Senior Aide and Chief of Staff, serving as the principal contact between the family members and all corporate partners, heads of state and high-end donors. Specifically, she worked for the Trump children, Donald Jr., Tiffany, Ivanka, and Eric and his wife, Lara. During the campaign, she worked as Donald Trump’s Senior Advisor and family liaison, focusing on minority engagement. The NY Daily News, citing Patton’s LinkedIn profile, had accused her in June of exaggerating her credentials by listing Yale and a Juris Doctor from Quinnipiac University School of Law in Connecticut next to the notation (N/A) -- leaving the impression that she had graduated from both when she does not actually have a law degree. Is HUD great again yet? More here.

Kickstarter Names New Director of Engineering
Tech advocate Erica Baker is leaving Slack after two years and starting a new position at Kickstarter as the Director of Engineering. She has written about her experiences working as one of the few Black women in tech, delivered TED talks, and Blavity reports that she has spoken at many conventions panels. After nine years at Google working in various positions, she joined Slack in 2015 as a Senior Build and Release Engineer. Now, she is the Director of Engineering at Kickstarter. In a post she penned for Medium she writes, “When I joined Slack, I had the opportunity to both grow myself and create the Build and Release team and infrastructure. I also helped grow and shape Slack’s thinking on Diversity and Inclusion. I was a leader both in the company and outside the company, and wanted my growth path to keep heading in a leadership direction.” Read the full post here.
The Latin Recording Academy to Receive Arts Award at the 30th Hispanic Heritage Awards
On Tuesday, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) announced that The Latin Recording Academy will receive the Arts Award at the 30th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards, which will take place on September 14th at the Warner Theatre in DC. A special music tribute segment from past Latin GRAMMY winners will also be included in the show, celebrating the first time the Hispanic Heritage Awards honor a membership-based arts organization. The Awards -- which were created by the White House in 1987 to commemorate the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month in America -- are among the highest honors by Latinos for Latinos, and supported by 40 national Hispanic-serving institutions that co-host the program, which this year will include top Latino performers and personalities paying tribute to the honorees from the stage, and will be broadcast nationally on Friday, October 6th on PBS. Barack and Michelle Obama Move Malia Into the Dorm
After completing her summer vacation on the Vineyard before starting college, Malia Obama headed for Harvard. It’s official. She moved in. Former President Barack Obama was spotted dining at Harvest restaurant in Harvard Square on Monday. Turns out the family took advantage of the solar eclipse by choosing that time for the move so they wouldn’t draw attention. The family was joined by members of the Secret Service as they pulled up to Malia's new residence in a two-SUV convoy, managing to avoid detection despite the thousands of people around the campus and in Cambridge. ESPN Pulls Robert Lee from UVA Game
On Tuesday night, ESPN confirmed that its management moved an Asian American announcer, Robert Lee, off of the University of Virginia's home opener football game simply because of the coincidence of his name. “We collectively made the decision with Robert to switch games as the tragic events in Charlottesville were unfolding, simply because of the coincidence of his name. In that moment it felt right to all parties. It’s a shame that this is even a topic of conversation and we regret that who calls play by play for a football game has become an issue,” the network said in a statement. Yes, they’re going this far so not to offend halfwits. Of note, this is the same network apologizing for the fantasy football slave draft a couple of weeks ago. More here.

Variety estimated salaries of some of TV's highest-paid reality, news and talk-show hosts. ABC’s Robin Roberts was the sole woman of color on the list. The co-anchor of Good Morning America more than earned her $18 million salary, as she has helped the broadcast win four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Morning Program and the 2017 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team. She also founded her own production company, Rock'n Robin Productions, which creates original broadcast and digital programming for ABC and other networks, ranging from informational shows and documentaries, to live special events. Black Trump Loyalists in the Aftermath of Charlottesville
NYT’s Yamiche Alcindor examines Black Republicans who were once loyal followers of Donald Trump and now feel conflicted following the terrorism in Charlottesville. Did they really need Charlottesville to Get Out? Because we have some video of his comments on the campaign trail that’s pretty consistent with his rhetoric today. Anyway, Shermichael Singleton (pictured) was fired from his job at HUD as a Senior Advisor in February after previous writings critical of Donald Trump came to light. Yet, he remained supportive. But now his support has diminished. In an interview with Yamiche, Singleton says, “It’s difficult to continue to have hope for President Trump. It’s difficult to focus on complex policy issues when you have a country that is falling apart. It’s difficult to focus on health care. It’s difficult to focus on the economy.” The majority of Black Republicans that Yamiche interviewed said they would continue to support the president even as they criticize him. Most said they hope that he will prove his critics wrong and usher in a new phase of conservative policies that will overhaul the tax code, create new jobs, transform the healthcare system, and revamp the country’s entitlement programs. Check out the full story here.
Jesse Jackson Corrects Katrina Pierson: Trump Never Endorsed Me
Speaking to the NYT, Katrina Pierson wanted to know how Donald Trump could be considered racist if he supported the first mainstream Black candidate’s campaigns for the White House? “A racist would not endorse Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaign in the ’80s twice,” she explained. But Jesse Jackson himself contradicts the alternative fact. “There is no evidence at all,” he told The Daily Beast. “I think he promised to endorse David Dinkins [for mayor in 1988] and did not. He never promised to endorse me.” Jackson ran twice for president, first in 1984 and then in 1988. But Jackson and Trump do have a history. Trump rented Jackson office space as part of a project to get more minorities in Wall Street jobs, which he had undertaken with the help of then-President Bill Clinton and business leaders. Woodfin Advances to Birmingham Mayoral Runoff
On Tuesday, Randall Woodfin advanced in his bid to unseat the incumbent mayor of Birmingham, AL. The 36-year-old progressive will face the 63-year-old incumbent Mayor William Bell in an October 3rd runoff in the predominantly African American city of about 212,000 residents. "I think the voters have spoken. They want change. They want responsive government. They want a mayor who believes in service leadership," said Woodfin, a Morehouse College graduate. As of this morning, Woodfin led the 12-candidate field with 43% of the vote, and Bell came in second with 35%. More here.
Judge Rules Mexican American Studies Ban Unconstitutional
Late Tuesday, U.S. District Judge A. Wallace Tashima (pictured) ruled that the state’s controversial ban on ethnic studies was motivated by racial discrimination. Tashima ruled that a law passed by the Arizona legislature in 2010 banning a Mexican American studies program in Tucson public schools violated students’ rights under the First and 14th Amendments. Proponents of the program said that the ban was discriminatory and designed to keep Latino students from learning about their history or studying writers of color often ignored in public schools. Tucson dropped its Mexican American studies program in 2012 under threat of losing state funding. Arizona Republicans, led by former Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne and his successor John Huppenthal, argued that the ethnic studies classes bred resentment against whites, which Tashima criticized in his ruling. “Both enactment and enforcement were motivated by racial animus,” Tashima wrote in his decision. “Defendants were pursuing these discriminatory ends in order to make political gains.” Tashima said he doesn't know a remedy for the violation and has not issued a final judgment. He will hold a hearing in the next three weeks to determine how the ruling should be enforced. More here from HuffPost.
Los Angeles Sues Justice Department
The LA Times reports that the city of Los Angeles is suing the DOJ, claiming that new conditions requiring police to cooperate with immigration enforcement officials to qualify for anti-crime funding are unconstitutional and should be blocked. City Attorney Mike Feuer said he is asking a federal judge to strike down rules AG Jeff Sessions announced last month for Justice Department funds that have long been dispersed to local law enforcement agencies to bolster efforts to fight violent and gang crime. Going forward, Sessions said, police agencies that want a piece of the funding would have to first demonstrate that they are willing to help immigration officials identify and detain people in local jails who are suspected of being in the country illegally. NYC Museum Boards Overwhelmingly White
In NYC, the percentage of people of color serving on boards remains strikingly low at most institutions, and some elite Manhattan museums and arts groups employ overwhelmingly white staffs even as they try to attract a broad cross-section of visitors, according to data collected by the NYT. While 67% of NYC residents identify as people of color, only 38% of employees at cultural organizations describe themselves that way. As part of the city’s new “cultural plan,” released last month, the 33 museums and arts groups in or on city-owned property -- which now receive about 63% of the $188.1 million in municipal financing -- will start submitting diversity, inclusion, and equity plans to the city in the fall of 2018. An additional 1,000 cultural organizations, which compete for the remaining city funds, will face a new question in the application process this February along the lines of, “How does your organization address diversity and inclusion in its staff, board and program?” Read more here.
Institutional Racism in MD Marijuana Licenses
In Maryland, there were 145 applicants for licenses to grow medical marijuana. Despite a state law requiring racial diversity in licensing, none of the 15 firms selected to start growing marijuana this summer are owned by African Americans. According to the WaPo, the commission set up to award the licenses decided to ignore racial diversity in favor of “geographic diversity,” which just happened to produce the all-white outcome. But when it came to marijuana arrests, the disparities in Maryland and DC were among the highest in the nation, with Blacks up to eight times more likely than whites to be arrested. Now Maryland is contending with allegations that the process was tainted. WaPo breaks down the story and highlights the corresponding institutional racism in the process. More here.

Pokanoket Set Up Encampment on Land It Says Was Stolen and Then Donated to Brown University
Members of the Pokanoket Nation and their supporters on Sunday began a long-term encampment on Brown University land -- land they say was illegally taken from them hundreds of years ago. The Pokanoket want to reclaim its ancestral home in Bristol, which contains spiritually important sites. Brown says they have held the legal title for more than 60 years after the land was donated to the university. Winds of Thunder, the tribe’s Sagamore, or chief of chiefs, called the land its “spiritual high grounds.” Tribe members and supporters have set up checkpoints at the access road to the 375-acre plot, which is located about half an hour’s drive from Brown’s main campus in Providence, RI, though they were allowing people to go through. Brown houses an archaeology collection and environmental lab there. Tribe members said they are engaged in a peaceful protest, and Brown issued a statement Sunday saying it upholds the right of people to assemble peaceably “provided that their actions do not infringe upon the rights of others.” The AP has more here.
