In this issue: Slam Diego, 12-6 curves, and puns, oh my!
Week 1:Inside baseball edition.
If you look good, you play good.
Just ask the back-in-brown Padres. While our inner grammar nerds may shudder at the word choice, we can’t argue with the sentiment. Last week, we asked you to submit mask designs that you’d be happy to sport – and you knocked it out of the park. Vote on your favorites, and we’ll print 10,000 each of the winning designs to distribute to fellow Tritons (for free) later in the quarter.
We're joining the .400 club.
Because a whole lot (ballpark figure) of you successfully completed weekly COVID tests last quarter, Chancellor Khosla has agreed to gift $400K to the Basic Needs Hub on campus as part of the Tritons Care for Tritons Initiative. That’ll buy a whole lot of hot dogs, peanuts and Cracker Jack, but more importantly, it will go a long way to support food and housing security for fellow Tritons.
Who's on first (dose)?
Who could say? You could – whether you’re on deck or in the dugout – if you register with CA’s MyTurn website to be alerted when you become eligible for tier-based vaccination. Also, check the CDC’s VaccineFinder for the best appointment to meet your needs.
One Buck on, one Buck off.
When broadcasting prodigy Joe Buck took the reins from his dad Jack, the transition was nearly seamless. Similarly (sorta), our COVID-test vending machines are switching next week to ID-card only, meaning that they’ll need to virtually "charge" $1 in order to dispense a test kit. An offsetting one-dollar credit will ensure that students’ account balances are unchanged.
Put on your rally CAPS.
We know that life is full of curveballs. And the pandemic is like a Barry Zito “lollipop” curveball – but in a “buttered popcorn straight from the movie theater floor”-flavor. Go to bat with community-based strength on your team, by taking advantage of CAPS’ drop-in group forums (PDF) focusing on anything from grief/loss to mindfulness or LGBTQ support.
Shake things up, Moneyball style.
Former A’s GM Billy Beane trusted data, and so do we. UC San Diego is currently participating in an NIH-led vaccine-efficacy clinical trial, that will pay participants up to $500. Like Mr. Beane (not that one), the PreventCOVIDU study aims to learn more by applying science – and it could be a game-changer in determining how and when we can get back on the field, er, campus.
You stepped up to the plate.
Whether you stayed local to take part in Spring Break 2021 events on-campus or remotely: we thank you. Your efforts to change-up the spread make a world of difference in our Triton community and beyond. Pics or it didn’t happen? Check out this slideshow of the weeklong series of activities.
