Nelson vs. Stolen Vehicles
UCSF Police Officer Nelson Li likes all the different aspects of police work, especially helping people and fighting crime. In August 2018, PD Officer Nelson Li received a
10851 Award given by CSAA Insurance Group and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for his excellent work in recovering stolen vehicles in San Francisco. The statewide award program is named after the California Vehicle Code number for vehicle theft, 10851, and is given to officers and sergeants who meet one of three rigorous criteria for stolen vehicle recovery success.
What makes you so good at recovering stolen vehicles?
I have an eye for it! At the beginning of every shift, I print off the latest “hot sheet” (a list of stolen vehicles in the county). Because we have locations all over the city, including UC Hastings, we are driving around a lot already because of the span of our patrol area. I found my niche and it feels good to help people.
Based on your experience, do you have any tips to prevent vehicle thefts?
Thieves are looking for an easy target. Even a small deterrent may be enough to steer a potential criminal away.
- Having car alarms and steering locks are great deterrents and work well, especially for older model vehicles that don’t have the latest technology that helps deter auto crimes.
- Try to park in well-lit, higher traffic areas. Use caution if you have to park in a dark or isolated place, like an alley or a secluded area of a parking garage.
