Is your airline running the crew rosters through a fatigue model as one of the last steps in the crew management process? Sorting out the bad 'products' by inspection, and then performing costly and time consuming re-work? Or perhaps hardly modifying anything, to avoid that re-work?
Some airlines have been trying this approach for FRMS for a couple of years, and it really is time to ask:
- How many percent lower risk have you reached?
- How much more efficient have you become?
If those questions are hard to answer, or the answers are very low numbers, perhaps the overall risk management approach should be questioned?
Some comfort can be found in that your airline is far from alone in taking this reactive approach, but you are using a quite dated methodology. We invite you to read in this paper about Statistical Process Control, a method used for decades in the manufacturing industry, and a great inspiration when it comes to improving production processes in a systematic way. An opportunity perhaps to become more proactive in improving the quality of your crew rosters, and reducing the overall risk?
