National Immunization Awareness Month
|
August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This annual observance highlights the efforts to protect people of all ages against vaccine-preventable diseases through on-time vaccination.
This year, NIAM serves as an important reminder to catch up on routine visits and vaccinations that may have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
During NIAM, schedule an appointment with your health care provider to ensure you are up to date on annual exams and recommended vaccines. Your health care provider will be able to share with you reliable and accurate information about the vaccines you need.
Learn more about NIAM and resources for parents and patients. You can also find helpful information about the Nashville Health Department Immunization Program.

| Faith & Health Collaborative Meets to Address Community Health Disparities
|
The Faith & Health Collaborative is an initiative that started as a partnership between the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance and the Greater Nashville Health Disparities Coalition. The group formed to address health disparities in the community by leveraging the intersection between faith and health.
After a nearly two-year pause, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the collaborative is meeting again! In the short time since the collaborative reconvened, the group of faith leaders, health professionals, and community members has set priorities, formed planning committees, and identified projects to support the community.
The Faith & Health Collaborative is open to any community member who would like to join. If you are interested in being a part of the collaborative, please join the next meeting on Thursday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. The collaborative meets the third Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m.
If you would like to learn more and join a meeting, please reach out to Christopher Smith, MVA Community Engagement Coordinator, at ca.smith@meharry-vanderbilt.org.

Join The Meharry-Vanderbilt Student Alliance (MVSA)
|
Last month, Meharry School of Medicine and Vanderbilt School of Medicine welcomed the class of 2026 MD students.
Staff advisors for the MVSA, Jack Wong and Mercedes Ridinger, were able to attend the Vanderbilt School of Medicine Orientation Organization Fair.
"It is great to get in front of new students and share opportunities available through the MVA," said Wong. "The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for organizations to engage students. It is rewarding to finally meet them in person!"
|
| The MVSA is a collaborative network that promotes resources and opportunities for students across institutions to connect with faculty, health professionals, community partners, and their peers.
All students seeking an advanced degree from Meharry Medical College or Vanderbilt University are welcome to join!

Nashville Medical Pioneer: Dr. Charles Roman
|
At the Vanderbilt Eye Institute, in conjunction with the History of Medicine Collection at the Eskind Biomedical Library, there is a small exhibit in a display case entitled "Nashville Medical Pioneers." It contains artifacts and information about pioneers in ophthalmology and its precursors.
|
|
One of the individuals highlighted is Dr. Charles Roman, who founded the Department of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology at Meharry Medical College.
If you are in the area of the Eye Institute, stop by and take a look. The display is on the first floor hallway adjacent to the Elliott Conference Room and the Eye Library. It can be viewed until next spring.
